What happens when something I do becomes part of who I am—and then it changes?
In this episode, I’m talking about the identities we pick up along the way: the roles we fill, the activities we love, the relationships that shape us, the choices we make, and even the things other people say about us.
I talk about homeschooling, dance, motherhood, grief, being called “negative,” the difference between behavior and identity, and what happens when a repeated pattern starts telling the truth about how other people are experiencing me. I also come back to something I’ve talked about before: keeping score, looking for proof that I’m doing a role well enough, and why a number can tell me something about what happened without telling me who I am.
Some identities are beautiful. Some are temporary. Some are handed to us. Some are created by our own choices. And some change whether we’re ready or not.
So maybe the question isn’t only, Who am I without this?
Maybe it’s also, What did this make in me that I get to carry forward?
And underneath all of it, I’m asking one bigger question: what identity is actually strong enough to carry the full weight of telling me who I am?
