In the hills of southwestern West Virginia, a modern legend took shape around reports of a large white-haired creature said to move through Boone County, Kanawha County, Putnam County, and Mason County. Witnesses and later retellings describe an animal with a bear-sized body, dirty wool-like fur, a long dog or sheep-like face, curved horns, clawed forelimbs, a thin tail, a violent scream, and a foul sulfur or musk odor. The creature became known as the Sheepsquatch, though some accounts connect it to older Appalachian White Thing or White Thang traditions.
