On October 4, 1967, seventeen-year-old Laurie Wickens and other witnesses near Shag Harbour, Nova Scotia, saw a row of flashing lights descend toward the Atlantic. Wickens did not report a UFO. He found a telephone and called the RCMP because he believed an aircraft had crashed into the water.

Police officers responded to the shoreline. Fishermen launched boats. Canadian Coast Guard Cutter 101 joined the search. Witnesses and responders reported a light on or near the water, and later accounts described a patch or trail of yellowish foam. Yet no survivors, aircraft wreckage, bodies, baggage, oil, or identifiable debris were found. Authorities checked for missing civilian and military aircraft and found none. A Department of National Defence memorandum later stated that a preliminary investigation had not attributed the sighting to a flare, float, aircraft, or any known object.

Canadian naval divers then searched the seabed off Shag Harbour. Their publicly reported result was negative.

Decades later, researchers Chris Styles and Don Ledger uncovered records and collected testimony alleging that an unidentified submerged object continued toward Shelburne, near Cold War underwater-surveillance facilities. That larger account is dramatic, but its central evidence comes from later recollections and anonymous sources rather than publicly available operational records.

The documented question remains narrower and more difficult: did a physical object enter the ocean off Shag Harbour, or did sincere witnesses and rescuers construct a crash interpretation around distant lights whose source and position were never established?
