Their relationship and the grooming process occurred online.

David and Chief McFarlane also discuss sextortion and online blackmail, including how predators can use personal information, friends lists, locations, photographs, and social connections to intimidate young victims. One investigation described during the episode uncovered thousands of potential victims connected to an offender using Snapchat.

Technology has transformed nearly every part of modern life—and human traffickers are adapting right along with it.

In this episode of The Secret World of Human Trafficking, host David J. Story examines how smartphones, social media, online gaming, private messaging, fake employment opportunities, cryptocurrency, artificial intelligence, and other digital tools can be exploited by traffickers to identify, groom, manipulate, recruit, and control potential victims.

Trafficking recruitment no longer has to begin at a bus station, shopping mall, school, shelter, or street corner. A trafficker can now begin building a relationship with someone hundreds or even thousands of miles away without ever meeting them in person.

David breaks down how online grooming can develop gradually—from initial contact and conversation to trust, emotional dependence, isolation, and eventually control. Traffickers may pose as romantic partners, friends, mentors, recruiters, modeling agents, musicians, entrepreneurs, students, or fellow gamers, carefully becoming whatever they believe their target needs.

The episode also explores the dangers of false identities, stolen photographs, fabricated online lives, private and encrypted communications, oversharing personal information on social media, gifts and incentives offered through gaming platforms, and fraudulent job opportunities that can lead victims directly into exploitation.

But technology is not presented simply as the enemy.

The same digital world criminals attempt to exploit is increasingly being used against them. Smartphones can contain location histories, photographs, messages, contacts, financial records, searches, deleted files, and other digital evidence. Blockchain transactions can sometimes be traced, digital forensic investigators can reconstruct communications, and artificial intelligence can help investigators process enormous amounts of information and identify patterns within criminal networks.

For parents, grandparents, teachers, coaches, and caregivers, one message is especially important: communication may be one of the strongest forms of protection. Young people need trusted adults they can approach without immediately fearing punishment or losing access to their devices.

Adults are also vulnerable. Fake jobs, fraudulent relationships, deceptive business opportunities, financial hardship, grief, loneliness, and major life changes can all create openings that traffickers may attempt to exploit.

This episode is not about fearing technology.

It is about understanding it.

Human trafficking existed long before smartphones and social media. Technology did not create trafficking—it changed the speed, distance, anonymity, and methods through which some traffickers can operate.

Caroline was 35 years old when she became trapped in an eight-year nightmare of human trafficking. Her story destroys the stereotype that trafficking only happens to young or naïve victims and reveals how traffickers can exploit grief, vulnerability, trust, love, fear, and dependency to create what survivors often describe as invisible chains.

This is more than a survivor story. It is a conversation about recognizing the signs of human trafficking, understanding why victims may struggle to leave, challenging our assumptions, and helping survivors rebuild their lives after exploitation.

Episode Summary

Caroline Pugh-Roberts was 35 years old, multilingual, well-traveled, and an accomplished skydiver when she became the victim of human trafficking. During a devastating period of grief and emotional vulnerability, a man entered her life offering comfort, affection, gifts, and security. What appeared to be love gradually became grooming, manipulation, isolation, violence, forced substance use, sexual exploitation, and control.

For eight years, Caroline endured sex trafficking, homelessness, addiction, physical abuse, financial exploitation, and repeated attempts to escape. She explains the psychological bond that can develop between traffickers and their victims and why the question, “Why didn’t she just leave?” fails to understand the reality of coercive control and trauma.

After finally escaping, Caroline discovered that freedom was only the beginning. She returned to school, studied human services and social work, and transformed her experiences into a mission to help others. She went on to develop survivor aftercare programs and train healthcare professionals and law enforcement—including the RCMP—on human trafficking, survivor psychology, trauma-informed care, and the importance of recognizing personal bias.

One of Caroline’s strongest messages throughout the interview is simple: CHECK YOUR BIAS. The person someone dismisses as an addict, prostitute, homeless person, or criminal may actually be a trafficking victim whose story has never been heard.

Caroline also discusses male trafficking victims, barriers survivors face after escaping, demand for commercial sexual exploitation, survivor advocacy, prevention, and the need for long-term recovery services.

The episode also highlights the Reclaim Her Smile campaign, being developed in conjunction with the Soroptimists, to help trafficking survivors whose teeth have been damaged or lost because of abuse, neglect, and forced drug use.
