For centuries, sailors, missionaries, fishermen, naval officers, and naturalists described unfamiliar forms moving through the water: long bodies, raised heads, repeated humps, fins, and trailing shapes that seemed difficult to fit within known natural history. This episode follows four of the best-preserved Atlantic sea-serpent cases: Hans Egede’s 1734 account near Greenland, the Gloucester sightings of 1817, the Royal Navy report from HMS Daedalus in 1848, and the 1905 observation by naturalists aboard the steam yacht Valhalla off Brazil. The surviving records include translated books, committee reports, signed statements, naval correspondence, newspaper engravings, and zoological proceedings. Together, they preserve an enduring question: did witnesses sometimes see animals still unknown to science, or did difficult conditions transform familiar animals and objects into the same inherited serpentine image?
