Paul writes to people living in the epicenter of idol manufacturing in the ancient world — a city where the economy depended on idolatry, where following Jesus had already cost people their livelihoods and their safety. And his prayer for them isn't protection or comfort. It's that the eyes of their heart would be opened: that they would know the hope to which they'd been called, the incredible inheritance available to them, and the incomparably great power already at work in their lives — the same power that raised Jesus from the dead.

That last detail is the one worth sitting with. The problem isn't that the power is weak or unavailable. If transformation isn't happening in your life — if you keep wanting more and experiencing less — something else is going on. And almost always, that something else is dishonesty. We are masterful at telling ourselves falsehoods about who we really are. And when we're dishonest, the eyes of our heart can't open. We can't see how the pieces fit together. We don't know where we are.

Which is exactly what you need before you can get anywhere. When you're lost in a foreign city, no amount of knowing where you want to go helps you if you can't find the little dot that says You Are Here. That dot — that honest starting point — is what Paul is praying for. Not just a feeling, not just a rational framework, not just a better attitude. The spirit of wisdom and revelation — something outside yourself that comes in and shows you exactly where you are, so you can move toward where God is calling you.

Discussion Questions
1. If the power that raised Jesus from the dead is already at work in your life, why do you think you don't see more of it? What might be in the way?
2. Where are you being dishonest with yourself — about who you are, what you want, or what's actually driving your choices? What would it take to name that honestly?
3. "You have to know where you are before you can get to where you're going." In your life right now, where are you actually — not where you wish you were?
