August 1998. Luna is locking up Saint Jude's after a weeknight novena when a woman slips through the side door just before she throws the bolt. She says her name is Lydia and she needs to light a candle for someone who died thirty years ago today. Luna offers to leave the votive rack lit while she finishes closing up, but Lydia does not walk toward the candles. She asks Luna to open the sacristy. She says the person who died was an altar server here in 1968. She says his name was Thomas and she is his mother. Luna knows the story of Thomas — every priest who served at Saint Jude's knows it — but the version Lydia tells inside the sacristy, with the door closed and the small lamp burning, is not the version in the parish archives. It is worse.
