Today, we’re diving into the relationship between spirit, truth, and how traditional religious culture has often separated the two.Segregating Spirit and TruthAdam Wolff: In typical church culture, we’ve developed a habit of elevating “spirit” to the highest realm while relegating “truth” to something far below it. We treat spirit as this high, heavenly, ethereal thing, and truth as merely a set of doctrine or facts that we hold in our heads. But when you look at how the New Testament authors use these terms—specifically the Greek word for truth, Aletheia—it means something much more concrete.Aletheia isn’t abstract theology. It refers to the plainly seen, observable, daily physical reality. It is the tangible world right in front of us. When Jesus speaks of worshiping in “spirit and truth,” he isn’t dividing existence into spiritual vs. physical tiers. He is talking about the breath of God animating the physical body and stewarding tangible reality.Jesus and the Woman at the WellAdam Wolff: You see this play out directly in John 4 with the story of Jesus and the Samaritan woman at the well. The Jews and Samaritans were locked in a deep historical, cultural, and religious divide. The Samaritans worshiped on Mount Gerizim, and the Jews worshiped in Jerusalem. They were arguing over where the proper spiritual location was.Jesus completely shifts the conversation. He crosses social and religious boundaries to meet this woman in her everyday, physical reality. He doesn’t engage in high-minded theological debates about which mountain is superior. Instead, he points to a “third space”—a reality where true worshipers worship the Father in spirit and in Aletheia. It’s no longer about sacred geographic locations; it’s about the spirit of God living within humans as they operate in the physical world.“I Am the Way, the Truth, and the Life”Adam Wolff: When we re-examine well-known verses through this lens, the whole narrative changes. Look at John 14:6, where Jesus says, “I am the way, the truth, and the life.”If Aletheia means physical, observable reality, then Jesus is stating that he is the embodiment of true reality.
