Saturday mornings in the 1960s belonged to kids.

There was no school, nowhere we had to be, and for a few glorious hours the television belonged entirely to us. We settled onto the floor with bowls of sugary cereal and disappeared into worlds where the ordinary rules rarely applied.

Those mornings offered adventure, absurdity, heroes, villains, impossible dangers, and a peculiar kind of logic that every child understood without explanation. Then, sooner or later, Mom sent us outside, where much of what we had just watched followed us into our own games and imaginations.

“Beep-Beep and Beyond” is a lighthearted trip back to the Saturday-morning ritual that helped define childhood for a generation, when a bowl of cereal, a television set, and an active imagination were enough to take you almost anywhere.

Remember when changing the channel required getting off the couch, television sets were pieces of furniture, and good reception sometimes depended on a pair of rabbit ears wrapped in aluminum foil?

In Chapter 8 of The Rocket Kid Chronicles, “Adjusting Rabbit Ears,” I look back at the arrival of television, the wonder of our first color set, and those evenings when three networks, a stubborn antenna, and a glowing screen were enough to keep an entire family entertained.

A nostalgic trip back to when television still felt like a glimpse of the future.

Remember when childhood creativity required little more than crayons, glue, old magazines, popsicle sticks? In this episode, my sister and I turn our mother’s kitchen table into an arts-and-crafts workshop where imagination runs wild. Everything goes beautifully. Until...
