The most natural-feeling place in Seoul — the Han River park at 1am — was almost entirely engineered in just four years.
Walking the Han River park past midnight, joggers, cyclists, and couples on picnic mats make the riverbank feel like it has always simply been there. It hasn't. Before the 1980s, the Han's banks were unstable mudflats prone to flooding, and the wide, walkable parks that now line both sides were built through a massive engineering project completed in a few short years — part flood control, part Olympic-era image-making ahead of the 1988 Seoul Olympics. Since then, the city has kept layering onto that engineered base: a ramen vending machine glowing at a convenience store by the river's edge, floating cafes, night markets, and 24-hour access that turns the park into one more piece of Seoul's overnight infrastructure. The river closes the season's loop — proof that the city doesn't just tolerate the night, it now designs for it, right down to the grass under a picnic mat.
