“I can never go to sleep. But I can lay quietly and not make a peep.” Our Steven Spielberg season continues with the disquieting 2001 science fiction epic A.I. Artificial Intelligence.

In the near future, in a post-ice cap melting world clinging to the vestiges of humanity’s consumer peak where procreation is carefully controlled, Professor Hobby (William Hurt) envisions a mechanical humanoid child created to emulate the one thing that has eluded technology - love. His employee Henry (Sam Robards) and wife Monica (Frances O’Connor), semi-grieving as their own child is in a cryogenic coma due to an illness, are given mecha David (Haley Joel Osment) to care for. A brutal adventure in a dangerous world ensues when David’s place in his makeshift home is threatened by the return of his flesh-and-blood ‘brother’.

A project that spent decades fomenting the mind of Stanley Kubrick, that he had sporadically tried to produce for Spielberg ever since seeing the latter’s E.T. convinced him that he was the right person to bring this adaptation of a 1966 short story to the screen, was finally put into production by Spielberg after Kubrick’s death as a tribute to his friend. We dig into the intersection between these two seemingly antithetical cinematic titans, and how themes of higher intelligences, creation and responsibility, and the painful intricacies of familial love and longing fit into their respective careers. We also talk about how sad we all were while watching it.

“EVERYBODY HAPPY!”

Dig out your Moby CDs, log onto My Excite, and check your electronic mail for Danny Boyle’s divisive, turn-of-the-millennium hippy-dippy paradise existential Leonardo DiCaprio vehicle The Beach.

Did its comedy conquer the world, or was it an ASSH*LE suggestion? Did it stand a chicken’s chance in Thailand? Was it a lot of dope, or f*cked in the head? Did it hurt, and if so, was it worth it? Did we have anything to smoke, or did we waste time taking photographs of the sky? Did we understand what Robert Carlyle was on about, or did it have a powerful index of incompatibility?

“It's just playing, I'm tellin' ya!” We’re taking a walk on the wild side with Noel Marshall’s notorious big cat passion project Roar.

Marshall himself plays research scientist Hank, who lives in a gigantic compound somewhere in East Africa with an outrageous amount of lions, tigers and other assorted megapredators running rampant through and around his home. Distracted by a disastrous meeting with his funding committee, he forgets to pick up his visiting family - wife Madeleine (Tippi Hedren) and their three kids (Marshall’s sons John and Jerry, and Hedren’s daughter Melanie Griffith). When the family arrive at the cat house just as Hank has belatedly set off to retrieve them, they spend a nerve-shredding day alone with the massive creatures.

The film’s flimsy story often pales in comparison to the circumstances of its production - Marshall and Hedren assembling their enormous collection and housing them in a huge preservation outside of Los Angeles, then sinking over half a decade and most of their fortune into a film that sent scores of cast and crew to the hospital, only to see it barely scrape a few token international releases before sinking into obscurity for over 30 years. Patrick and Devlin are here to talk about a rare and memorable screening they went to a few months back, and gawp in disbelief at the clawesome carnage on display.
