In Episode 2, I speak with Jonathan Horn, a Campaigner for PETA, about his role and how he got involved, the major issues that PETA is working on now, and how people can get involved in taking action.

PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) is the largest animal rights organization in the world, with more than 6.5 million members and supporters.

PETA opposes speciesism, a human-supremacist worldview, and focuses its attention on the four areas in which the largest numbers of animals suffer the most intensely for the longest periods of time: in laboratories, in the food industry, in the clothing trade, and in the entertainment industry. We also work on a variety of other issues, including the cruel killing of rodents, birds, and other animals who are often considered “pests” as well as cruelty to domesticated animals.

PETA works through public education, cruelty investigations, research, animal rescue, legislation, special events, celebrity involvement, and protest campaigns.

This is the first official episode of The Rescue Realtor Podcast!  It is an interview with Marlene Mitten and Emily Ensor of Castaway Pet Rescue, Inc.  I helped Marlene sell her home in Libertyville and Castaway was the obvious choice for the 10% commission donation.  Castaway received $1,089.00 rom the sale.

Castaway Pet Rescue Inc. is a 501c3 non-profit, foster-home based licensed animal rescue organization located in the midwest. They bring homeless dogs into their network of volunteer foster homes (their personal homes) where they receive medical care and are given the chance to  acclimate to life outside a shelter.  The foster homes aid in evaluating the personality and temperament of the dog to assist in providing the best adoptive home situation possible.  Marlene and Emily started out as fosters for Castaway and eventually took over the entire operation of the rescue.  

Emily recently became a DVM and practices at VCA Pine Ridge in Andover, Minneapolis.  They work with the local humane society to provide free first exams for shelter pets, a service near and dear to Emily's heart and something she wishes to expand on in her career.  

Castaway has pulled the majority of dogs in the past from CACC (Chicago Animal Care and Control).  They will continue to work with them as they move their homebase to Minneapolis.  

Castaway is in need of foster homes in Illinois, Minneapolis and other areas in the Midwest.  They are also in need of donations to help cover the costs of new rescues as well as special needs fosters that require lifelong care.
