He picked the more expensive repair and looked relieved doing it.

Late August, a brick ranch on the edge of town, the kind built in the nineties with the condenser tucked up against the north wall where nobody ever hears it run. Retired couple, both home all day, which matters in August. The air had been blowing warm since Sunday and they waited until Wednesday to call because they were hoping it would come back on its own.

They agreed to the diagnostic on the phone without a pause. I said what it was, one flat number, and the man said fine, when can you be here. No haggling, no let me think about it, no call me back after I talk to my wife.

I got out there and found a refrigerant leak in the evaporator coil.

So I laid out the two ways to go. I could replace the coil, which is a known job with a known part and a number I could hand him standing right there. Or I could go find the leak and repair it, which on a coil that age is often a small fix at a joint, and would very likely cost him less. But I could not tell him how much less until I was into it. So I gave him a range.

Not after sleeping on it. Almost immediately. And when he said it, his shoulders came down about two inches.

I want to be clear about what happened in that hallway, because I have had this exact conversation more times than I can count and I misread it for years. He did not pick the coil because he thought the coil was the better repair. He picked it because the coil had a number attached and the other one had a hole where the number should be.

There is a paper about this from 1961 by a man named Daniel Ellsberg, called Risk, Ambiguity, and the Savage Axioms. Ellsberg is better known in this country for other things entirely. This is the piece of him that ended up in my work.

Core line: "If I get in there and it turns out to be the coil itself, it goes to this other number, and I will stop, come out to you, and tell you before I spend a dollar of it."
