“The Relationship Escalator: Are You Building a Life Together, or Just Following the Script?”
You meet.
You date.
You become exclusive.
You move in together.
You get engaged.
You marry.
You buy a home.
You have children.
You stay together.
For generations, this progression has functioned as one of the dominant cultural scripts for romantic relationships. Each milestone appears to prove that the relationship is becoming more serious.
But does progression automatically mean progress?
In Episode 62 of Love Science Today, Kehinde Ojo examines the relationship escalator, the social expectation that successful romantic relationships should move through a predictable sequence of increasingly binding milestones.
We explore why couples sometimes advance because the relationship is healthy, but at other times advance because stopping would require difficult questions. We examine relationship inertia, cohabitation, sunk costs, social pressure, milestone anxiety, weddings, parenthood, fear of “wasting years,” and the difference between consciously choosing the next stage and simply sliding into it.
This episode also asks a deeper question: can two people become increasingly committed while becoming increasingly incompatible?
Because moving in together does not solve disconnection.
Engagement does not manufacture compatibility.
Marriage does not repair contempt.
A baby does not rescue a collapsing partnership.
And time invested does not automatically create a future worth investing in.
The question is not merely:
“What is our next milestone?”
It is:
“Why are we taking it, and would we still choose it if nobody else expected us to?”
