The Regulated Parent is a podcast for parents who want to move beyond performance-based parenting and into deeper connection, regulation, and understanding.

Through thoughtful conversations with professionals, educators, therapists, and parents from South Africa and Australia, we explore the nervous system, emotional development, sensory experiences, attachment, communication, and the realities of modern parenting in a way that feels grounded, intelligent, and human.

This is not a podcast about perfect parenting.
It is a space for honest conversations about raising children with greater awareness, compassion, and emotional insight.

Because most of us weren’t taught how to do this.

  • Why an Autism Diagnosis is Not a System of Care
    2026/09/10

In this episode of The Regulated Parent, Toyer and Kay Jappie go beyond the diagnosis to ask what a genuine system of care should look like.

For parents, we explore what to do after diagnosis without feeling that you have to solve your child’s entire future at once.

For paediatricians and clinicians, we ask how we can move beyond the referral list, hold the whole child in view, create more neuro-affirming consultations and connect care beyond the consulting room.

For grandparents and extended family, we talk about one of the most powerful things you can offer: learn the child, believe the family and become a place where that child does not have to perform in order to belong.

Because we can have excellent paediatricians, excellent therapists, excellent teachers and excellent services, and still have fragmented care.

We have become very good at referring the child.
Now we need to become better at holding the whole child.

The goal is not to build a team of professionals around autism.

The goal is to build a connected circle of care around a human being.

  • Your Child has been Diagnosed Autistic - Now What : Part 2
    2026/08/13

In Part 2 of The Regulated Parent, Kay and Toyer move beyond the diagnosis itself and explore what the latest thinking in autism science is asking families to reconsider.

What happens when we stop asking, “How do we make this child more typical?” and start asking, “How does this child experience the world?”

This episode explores identity-first language, autistic identity, sensory processing, interoception, masking, communication beyond speech, the double empathy problem, nervous-system regulation, school, support, self-advocacy and the cost of simply “coping.”

It is also a deeply personal conversation about parenting with curiosity rather than fear, understanding behaviour as communication, and resisting the pressure to turn childhood into a treatment programme.

Because diagnosis does not give you a different child.

It can give you a deeper understanding of the autistic child who was there all along.

Warm, practical, scientifically informed and grounded in love, this episode asks perhaps the most important question after diagnosis:

    What can we understand differently?

  • Your Child Has Been Diagnosed Autistic...Now What?
    2026/07/29

What happens after the assessment is over?

After the report has been handed to you.

After you’ve walked out of the consulting room.

After everyone else has gone back to their lives.

This episode is for that moment.

In this deeply personal and practical conversation, Kay and Toyer Jappie share their family’s journey following their daughter Grace’s autism diagnosis and the lessons they wish someone had shared with them from the very beginning.

Together, they explore the emotional impact of diagnosis on parents, why it’s okay to experience complex emotions, and how understanding—not fear—became the turning point in their family’s journey.

Drawing on lived experience, education and neuro-affirming practice, this episode explores:

    • What an autism diagnosis really means.
    • Understanding the neurodivergent brain.
    • Why behaviour is communication.
    • Sensory processing, regulation and the nervous system.
    • Why nothing about your child needs fixing.
    • The difference between support that helps a child flourish and support that aims to make them appear less autistic.
    • How to avoid becoming overwhelmed by therapies and appointments.
    • Why parents should never outsource their relationship with their child.
    • The importance of recognising strengths alongside support needs.
    • How to become your child’s most informed and confident advocate.
    • Why connected, collaborative care matters.
    • And perhaps most importantly, why your relationship with your child remains the most powerful foundation for growth.

Whether you are a parent who has just received a diagnosis, a grandparent, educator or healthcare professional, this episode offers a compassionate, evidence-informed starting point for understanding autism beyond the diagnostic report.

It is an invitation to move away from fear, comparison and the pressure to “fix,” and towards curiosity, connection and genuine understanding.

A Resource for Families and Professionals

We hope this episode becomes more than a podcast.

We hope it becomes a resource.

If you’re a paediatrician, psychologist, psychiatrist, GP, speech pathologist, occupational therapist, educator or any professional supporting neurodivergent children and their families, we invite you to share this episode with parents following a diagnosis.

Sometimes the most valuable thing we can offer a family isn’t another report.

It’s a conversation that helps them feel understood, informed and less alone as they begin this journey.

Because no family should leave a diagnosis carrying uncertainty on their own.

    Welcome to The Regulated Parent.
