  • Fiona Ross: Empowering Masculinity in a Feminist World
    2025/03/24
In this exciting first episode of season 3, Sophie has a heartfelt conversation with Fiona Ross, an esteemed coach who specialises in empowering men to find balance, wholeness, and integrity in their lives.

Sophie and Fiona delve into a thought-provoking discussion about the role of men in the midst of the rise of feminism. While feminism has brought about significant positive changes for women, it's important to acknowledge that men should not be excluded from the conversation.

This episode explores the necessity of embracing both masculine and feminine energies in the world, understanding that true harmony and progress can only be achieved when men and women blend their unique strengths and work together as allies.

Drawing inspiration from the concept of yin and yang, Sophie and Fiona explore the idea that achieving a sense of equity between genders is more significant than simply pursuing equality. They challenge the notion of a victim society and discuss the unfortunate reality that men often feel apprehensive about being alone with women, fearing false accusations and potential harm to their reputations. It's crucial to create an environment that fosters trust, understanding, and respect between both genders.

This episode sheds light on the struggles faced by men in our modern society. Fiona shares her observations from working with male clients, who often find themselves sacrificing their own well-being, attempting to shoulder all responsibilities, and ultimately burning out. Shocking statistics on male suicide highlight the urgency of addressing these issues and creating a supportive and peaceful world for men.

The conversation delves into the concept of mansplaining, examining instances where women unintentionally emasculate men whilst also tackling the idea of toxic masculinity and the importance of holding space for men's vulnerability. Society has conditioned men to suppress their emotions, leading to a fear of judgment and ridicule for displaying any form of sensitivity or fear. It's time to redefine masculinity and create an inclusive culture that allows men to embrace their emotions fully.

Additionally, this episode explores the significance of male camaraderie and the impact of the closure of traditional gathering places, such as pubs, on men's mental well-being. Men need spaces where they can connect with other men, build friendships, and share their experiences without judgment. The demands placed on men and the lack of emphasis on self-care have resulted in many neglecting their own needs, leading to burnout and dissatisfaction.

Join us on this eye-opening journey as we shed light on the importance of embracing men's unique qualities, supporting their well-being, and creating a world where both men and women can thrive together. It's time to break free from societal expectations and foster an environment that encourages authenticity, vulnerability, and collaboration.

  • Sophie On: Loneliness in Leadership
    2023/05/07
In this special mini-episode, (the Sophie Solo I like to call them), I dive into some personal stories of mine all around loneliness.

This is a topic that I find people rarely talk about from a career perspective, but more from a personal perspective, but this was something that came about when I was thinking back on my own career path.

Having been in a corporate leadership role from a young age, I wanted to share my experiences in this, and also now years later as I run my own business, the loneliness still resides.

HR can also really keep you in a silo, due to the nature of the job and knowing highly sensitive information, makes for a very lonely experience. Where does HR go, when they are the leaning pillar for the company?

As a business owner now, I try to surround myself with vibrant people who can help me learn, grow and have a good time too. But as an entrepreneur, you need to actively seek out this as you don’t have colleagues you can fall back on.

If you are feeling this, know you are not alone and things do get better. Harness the power of your loneliness, lean on those around you and find your tribe!

  • Libby Vincent: Beyond Our Gender, Conversations on Feminism, Authentic Leadership, and the Importance of Being Yourself
    2023/04/19
Sophie and Libby delve into the topics of feminism and International Women's Day. They explore the different ways in which women are perceived in the workplace and the wider world.

Sophie shares her personal journey as a young leader at the age of 25 and the challenges she faced in leadership roles not only as a woman but as a young leader. They discuss how certain leadership styles can lack authenticity and limit your potential to add value and emphasize the importance of being able to shine as yourself rather than simply fulfilling a role description.

Sophie and Libby also touch on the issue of pinkwashing and how it tends to occur on International Women's Day. They also debate the leadership styles of agentic and communal leadership – directive and authoritative – and how to find the balance between them. They stress the importance of looking at how people lead rather than letting their gender define their leadership style.

Moreover, they address the misconception of gender and how women and men are perceived differently, and highlight the problems within feminism. They explain that it's not about the gender you present as, but rather about the expectations attached to that gender that can prevent you from delivering your full potential. Lastly, Sophie debates with Libby about the case for men and how it's important to talk about men's issues and problems equally as women.
