The Reading Glasses Sat on the Step and Proved She Never Left
In this episode, we walk through the moment a paper carrier found Room Seven's door open at 5:47 a.m. and the odd arrangement of three small, stubborn facts at the Sandpiper Motor Court. What questions do those objects raise about Paula Hall's last evening and the hours that followed?
Date: August 12, 1953
Location: Sandpiper Motor Court, U.S. Highway 40, high desert
Person: Paula Hall, 62, retired schoolteacher, tenant since June 1953
Observer: Crystal Bennett, 16, paper carrier
Investigator: Lloyd Carlson, Holt County Sheriff's office
- At 5:47 a.m. Crystal found the door to Room Seven open, Tuesday's newspaper folded in the slot and untouched.
- A pair of reading glasses sat centered, lenses up, on the exterior concrete step - placed with deliberate care.
- The room key lay on the nightstand inside, about eight feet from the open door, while the door's self-latching mechanism was functional.
- Owner Burt Neeley observed Paula Hall near the ice machine at about 8:10 p.m. the previous evening and saw Chad Cole's truck on the property.
- Carlson recorded the scene methodically, writing in his notes four unfinished words that pointed toward an unresolved puzzle.
