- Cheryl had called her brother Dennis every Wednesday at 9:00 PM for seven years straight; the last call was Wednesday, October 8, 2003, and she did not call on October 15.
- Detective Vic Alderman declared the case inactive in January 2004, based in part on a $400 withdrawal on October 14, 2003, a lapsed storage unit contract, and the missing car.
