Sonny Melendrez joined me for one of the most joyful conversations I have had on this podcast. Sonny is a Radio Broadcasters Hall of Fame inductee, a Disney Channel pioneer, a voice artist mentored by Mel Blanc himself, and a professional speaker whose career spans more than five decades. But what struck me most was not the resume. It was the thread running through all of it: a kid in a tree house, dreaming without limits, who simply never stopped.

Sonny grew up behind his father's barbershop, calling friends one at a time from a payphone, playing his little homemade radio shows into the receiver. He was podcasting before the word existed. What he was really doing was giving himself permission. That is the principle I kept returning to in our conversation. Dreams find people who have no idea they are ready. They found Sonny in San Antonio. They found me in Little Rock. The question is whether you give them room to grow.

Sonny coined the phrase intentional enthusiasm, and he lives it fully. He reflected on three things that powered every success in his career: belief in himself, a clear vision of what he wanted, and gratitude as a daily practice. He writes his goals. He begins each morning in quiet. He treats every relationship as a door with a small glass window, waiting to be opened. That is not a technique. That is a way of being.

We talked about breaking into voice work and radio with nothing but a transistor radio and a dream. We traced Sonny's path from San Antonio college radio to KMPC in Los Angeles, from Hanna-Barbera Studios with Mel Blanc to becoming the first male host on the Disney Channel. We talked about gratitude as spiritual magnetism, the Walt Disney and Mike Vance story about fulfillment, and why the child inside you is not something to outgrow.

You can reach Sonny at sonnymelendrez.com and across all major platforms. Look him up. His story will stay with you.

Richard Battle joined me for one of those conversations that feels less like an interview and more like a long breakfast between old friends. Richard is the author of the Americans Who Made America series, and he lives right here in Lakeway, Texas, not far from my front door. We have known each other since our Junior Chamber of Commerce days, and that shared history gave this conversation a warmth and depth that I think you will feel from the first minute.

Richard's books are not nostalgia. They are civics education in story form. We talked about why the founders were so brilliant, how the Connecticut Compromise and the Electoral College protect minority voices, and why a republic is not the same thing as a democracy. Aristotle said it plainly 2,500 years ago: republics decline into democracies, and democracies degenerate into despotism. That is not ancient history. That is a live warning.

We explored why free enterprise, for all its imperfections, remains the most generous and life-affirming economic system ever tried. Voluntary exchange is the key phrase. No government agency required. No guilt attached. Just people freely trading the gifts they were given. We also talked about why fairness, as a governing ideal, collapses the moment you apply it to real life. Nature is not fair. An acorn does not get to choose whether it becomes an oak.

The phrase that stayed with me longest was this one: paying it forward is an incomplete gesture. What we owe the people who built this country is not a small kindness passed to the next stranger in line. It is a full return of the blessing, passed deliberately to the generations we will never meet. That is the obligation Richard writes about, and it is the obligation I feel every time I sit down to teach.

Richard's full library, including Americans Who Made America, Made in America, The Unopened Present, and eleven other titles, is available at richardbattle.com. All books ship signed. You can also find him on social media as RichardV Battle. V for victory.

Capt Charlie Plumb CPE joined me for one of the most meaningful conversations I have had on this podcast. Charlie is Navy Captain, former fighter pilot, and a man who spent over 2,000 days as a prisoner of war in Vietnam. He came home not broken, not bitter, but clear. Clear about purpose, clear about people, and clear about what it means to grow through the hardest seasons a human being can face. That clarity is what makes him one of the most trusted voices I know.

Charlie's central message is simple and earned. The men who endured the longest captivity came home the healthiest. Of all Vietnam combatants, roughly 30 percent carry PTSD. Among long-term prisoners of war, that number drops to 4 percent. Charlie does not explain that away. He leans into it. Adversity, he says, is a horrible thing to waste. You can become bitter, or you can become better. He chose better, and 591 fellow prisoners went on to produce generals, admirals, senators, and a presidential candidate.

We talked about the story that became Charlie's signature message. Years after returning home, a stranger approached him in a Kansas City restaurant and said, I'm the man who packed your parachute. That quiet sailor had done his job well, unseen and uncelebrated, and Charlie's life depended on it. The question Charlie now carries into every room is this: whose parachute are you packing? Who depends on the quiet, faithful work you do every day?

We explored Charlie's path from reluctant storyteller to one of the most sought-after speakers in the world. We talked about building a speaking career from scratch, the role of Toastmasters, including the club Charlie helped start inside the prison camp itself, and the bracelets worn by Americans across the country who refused to forget the men still held overseas. We also looked ahead to our Professional Expert Summit at the Reagan Presidential Library in September 2026.

Charlie's book, I'm No Hero, is in its 36th printing. Every copy ordered through his website is personally signed. Visit charlieplumb.com to reach him directly. He answers his own emails.
