    In this special episode of The Porter Voices Podcast, we step beyond Nepal to explore the experiences of women guides across the world's most iconic mountain destinations. Recorded live during the 3-Day Pilot Women Leadership & Guide Training held in February 2026, this powerful conversation brings together female mountain professionals from Morocco, Tanzania (Kilimanjaro), Pakistan, and Mongolia.

    Despite working in vastly different cultures, landscapes, and tourism systems, these women share common challenges—and a shared determination to create pathways for future generations of women in mountain tourism.Through candid storytelling and cross-cultural dialogue, our guests discuss how they entered the guiding profession, the barriers they have overcome, the importance of mentorship and training, and their visions for a more inclusive outdoor industry.

    This episode highlights a simple but powerful truth: whether in the Himalayas, the Atlas Mountains, the Karakoram, the Altai Mountains, or on the slopes of Kilimanjaro, women guides are redefining leadership in the mountains.

    The program serves as a foundation for future initiatives aimed at supporting women guides through education, mentorship, storytelling, and workforce development.

    In this episode of The Porter Voices Podcast, we feature Sushila Acharya, a pioneering woman in Nepal's trekking industry whose remarkable journey spans more than two decades—from carrying loads as a porter to becoming a trekking guide and eventually founding her own travel company.Originally from the remote mountain district of Jumla, Sushila left home in search of opportunities that were largely unavailable to women in her community. Alongside her friend and fellow trailblazer Durga Rawal, featured in Episodes 1–3, she made the life-changing journey to Pokhara to pursue a future in Nepal's tourism industry.What followed was years of hard work, sacrifice, and determination.Sushila shares the realities of working as a female porter in an industry dominated by men, the challenges she faced while building a career in the mountains, and the resilience required to continue when few people believed in her path. For many years, her parents opposed her decision to work in trekking and tourism, hoping she would follow a more traditional role. Yet Sushila remained committed to her dream.Over time, her persistence paid off—not only did she build a successful career as a guide, but she also earned the respect and acceptance of her family, who eventually came to support the path she had chosen.Today, Sushila is the founder of her own travel company and serves as an inspiration to a new generation of women entering Nepal's adventure tourism industry.
