Dr. Sheryl Recinos became a physician carrying a past that few of the people around her could see. She had experienced homelessness, endured profound personal loss after her brother ended his life, and eventually decided to put the story of her life into a book.

Telling it, however, raised another set of questions.

In this deeply personal episode of Stories from Inside Healthcare, Dr. Recinos recounts the experiences that shaped the physician she became, her decision to make the most difficult parts of her life public, and the complicated response she encountered within healthcare when her story did not fit comfortably inside the traditional image of a doctor. Her journey opens a larger conversation about vulnerability, belonging, and how much of themselves physicians are truly allowed to bring into the institutions where they work.
