• They Were Artists Not Entrepreneurs — Then They Built a Business That Lasted 50 Years
    2026/10/05
What does it take to build a creative business that lasts for more than 50 years? While exploring Philadelphia, I walked into Eyes Gallery on South Street because something about the beautiful colors, artwork, and handcrafted pieces caught my attention. Almost immediately, I had a feeling there was a story behind this place.I had no idea just how remarkable that story would be.In this episode of The Pauline Chilton Show, I sit down with artist, entrepreneur, and longtime Philadelphia business owner Julia Zagar to talk about the extraordinary journey behind Eyes Gallery—and how creativity, community, art, and entrepreneurship came together to create something that has endured for more than five decades.Julia takes us back to her early days studying art in New York, traveling to Mexico, and serving in the Peace Corps in Peru with her husband and fellow artist, Isaiah Zagar. Their experiences working with artisans and discovering the incredible colors, textiles, ceramics, and craftsmanship of Latin America would eventually help shape the business they created in Philadelphia. When Julia and Isaiah arrived on South Street, it was very different from the destination people know today. Buildings were inexpensive, storefronts were empty, and a group of young artists and entrepreneurs began moving in and creating something together.Julia and Isaiah were among them. What began with two artists, a building, a collection of beautiful handmade objects, and what Julia describes as a little bit of "gumption" grew into a business that would remain part of South Street for more than half a century. But this isn't simply a story about building a successful retail business. It's about what happens when entrepreneurs become part of the fabric of a community.Julia shares how artists, shop owners, performers, restaurants, families, and neighbors supported one another as South Street evolved. They created businesses, held celebrations, helped one another through difficult times, introduced visitors to different cultures, and created opportunities for artists to share their work.We also talk about resilience. After nearly 50 years in its original location, Eyes Gallery was severely damaged by a five-alarm fire that began next door. Rather than abandoning the community they had spent decades helping build, Julia and her team moved across the street and reinvented the gallery for its next chapter. And then there's the remarkable artistic legacy of Julia's late husband, Isaiah Zagar, whose mosaics grew into one of Philadelphia's distinctive cultural treasures, Philadelphia's Magic Gardens. At 86, Julia also shares her perspective on success, creativity, entrepreneurship, supporting artists, and what she hopes future generations will carry forward. For anyone building a business, pursuing a creative dream, supporting a local community, or wondering whether something meaningful can grow from a simple idea, Julia's story is a beautiful reminder:You don't always need to know exactly where you're going when you begin. Sometimes you start with something you believe in, find your people, support one another, adapt when life changes—and keep going. In this conversation, we explore:• How Julia and Isaiah Zagar turned their lives as artists into a sustainable business • The early days of Eyes Gallery and Philadelphia's South Street • Working with artisans in Peru and discovering the art and culture of Mexico • How creative entrepreneurs helped build a thriving local community • Why supporting other artists became part of the business • Building a business without a traditional business background • Surviving change, setbacks, and a devastating fire after decades in business • The evolution of Isaiah Zagar's mosaics and Philadelphia's Magic Gardens • Julia's advice for young entrepreneurs afraid of failure • Why physical spaces, art, human connection, and community still matter in an increasingly digital worldWhether you're an artist, entrepreneur, small business owner, creative professional, or someone dreaming about building something of your own, I think you'll find inspiration in Julia's story. This was one of those conversations I never could have planned.I simply walked into a beautiful shop in Philadelphia, became curious about the people behind it, and asked a question.I'm very glad I did.The Pauline Chilton Show Conversations about entrepreneurship, creativity, wellness, personal growth, community, and the people whose stories inspire us to see what's possible.#JuliaZagar #EyesGallery #IsaiahZagar #Philadelphia #SouthStreetPhiladelphia #PhiladelphiaArtists #CreativeEntrepreneur #ArtistEntrepreneur #SmallBusiness #Entrepreneurship #WomenInBusiness #CommunityBuilding #CreativeBusiness #PhiladelphiaMagicGardens #ThePaulineChiltonShow Support the showConnect with PaulineSee Me LiveI'd love to meet you in person! • He Started With Almost Nothing… Then Built a Thriving Restaurant | Two Street Crab House Part 2
    2026/09/29

What started as a search for a good place to eat in Philadelphia turned into an unexpected conversation about entrepreneurship, perseverance, growth, and remembering where you started.

After taking the ferry across the river, exploring some of Philadelphia's historic sites, and doing plenty of walking, we were ready to eat. We searched online, came across photos from Two Street Crab House, and thought, "This looks like a place we need to try."

It turned out to be a wonderful discovery.

In Part 1, owner Chad introduced us to Two Street Crab House and the elevated seafood experience he's creating in Philadelphia. But after we stopped recording, Chad stayed and continued talking with us.

Then he started telling us how his journey actually began.

I knew we needed to turn the camera back on.

In Part 2, Chad shares how he started in the restaurant business in 2014 with a simple goal: make $500 a week.

His cook taught him. Chad learned. The business grew.

In those early days, money was so tight that he would shop for the restaurant every single day because he only made enough to purchase the food he needed for the next day.

Eventually, they outgrew the original space. The business evolved from breakfast to dinner. Then COVID arrived, and they shifted to takeout.

Instead of ending the story, that difficult period became another turning point.

A mentor encouraged Chad to think bigger and invest in a liquor license. He listened—and the growth that followed was remarkable.

Chad shares how the journey eventually took him from trying to make $500 a week to, seven years later, generating $30,000 a week.

But what struck me most wasn't the number.

    It was his gratitude.

He remembers what it was like to start with almost nothing. He remembers the people who supported him. And as his businesses have grown, creating a welcoming place for his community continues to matter to him.

This is exactly why I love talking to people when I travel.

    We went looking for seafood.

    We found a great restaurant.

And then, completely unexpectedly, we found a great entrepreneurial story.

  • Two Street Crab House Philadelphia | We Came for Seafood & Found a Story
    2026/09/28

Sometimes the best places are the ones you weren't looking for.

While exploring Philadelphia, we happened upon Two Street Crab House at 2nd and South — and almost immediately, we knew we'd found the right place. The atmosphere was relaxed, the welcome was warm, and then we met the owner, Chad, who took a few minutes to tell us about the restaurant and the experience he's creating.

Two Street Crab House specializes in taking the familiar seafood boil and giving it an elevated twist, while still creating the kind of welcoming atmosphere that makes you feel at home.

And then there was the FOOD.

We ordered a beautiful seafood spread, and before we knew it, what started as a spontaneous stop had turned into a conversation I wanted to keep going.

That's actually how this became a two-part episode.

After we finished this first recording, Chad stuck around and started telling us more about how Two Street Crab House came to be. His story was so interesting that I asked, "Can we record this?"

    Thankfully, he said yes.

So consider Part 1 your introduction to the food, the atmosphere, and the man behind Two Street Crab House. In Part 2, we're going deeper into Chad's story and the origins of the business.

  • A Local Told Me This Was the BEST Philly Cheesesteak… So I Went | Camden, NJ
    2026/09/22

Sometimes the best places aren't the ones you plan to visit — they're the ones the locals tell you about.

While exploring Camden, New Jersey and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, I asked a simple question: Where should I go for a really good Philly cheesesteak?

That question led me to Donkey's Place, an unassuming neighborhood institution in Camden that turned out to be exactly the kind of place I love discovering.

I walked in expecting a cheesesteak. I walked out with a story.

In this short, on-the-spot episode of The Pauline Chilton Show, you'll come along as I order my first Donkey's cheesesteak and strike up a conversation with some wonderful people I had just met.

One of them, John, was approaching his 89th birthday and shared memories of eating cheesesteaks in South Philadelphia going all the way back to the 1950s. His stories about neighborhood dances, gathering over cheesesteaks, and the way people connected with complete strangers around a table turned a quick food stop into something much more memorable.

    And his review of Donkey's?

He told me he'd "drive a thousand miles to eat a cheesesteak here."

Then I discovered something I hadn't known when I decided to visit: Anthony Bourdain had been here too.

Donkey's Place was featured in the New Jersey episode of Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown. Bourdain praised its distinctive Jersey-style cheesesteak, served with fried onions and American cheese on a round seeded roll.

I didn't follow Anthony Bourdain to Donkey's. A local sent me there.

And that's probably my favorite part of this story.

I love visiting the places people who actually live in a community tell me I shouldn't miss—the neighborhood restaurants, small businesses, historic places and unexpected gems that don't always make it onto a carefully planned itinerary.

Sometimes you just have to talk to people, ask questions and follow your curiosity.

    That's how I found Donkey's.

And once again, it led me somewhere pretty special.

This episode is part of my Camden, New Jersey & Philadelphia, Pennsylvania travel series, where I'm sharing some of the people, places, food, history and unexpected experiences I discovered along the way.

If you enjoy discovering local gems and the stories behind the places we visit, subscribe to The Pauline Chilton Show and come along for the next stop.

  • Lone Star Candle Supply Outlaw Collection Review | Blind Fragrance Reactions
    2026/08/12

What do Lone Star Candle Supply’s Outlaw Collection fragrance oils actually smell like? In this blind fragrance review, I’m opening the collection for the first time and sharing my completely unscripted reactions—without reading the scent descriptions or fragrance notes beforehand.

In this episode of The Pauline Chilton Show, I smell and review five fragrances from the Lone Star Candle Supply Outlaw Collection:

Desperado • Gunpowder • Open Range • Ranch Hand • Western Lace

From smooth leather and woody fragrances to fresh greenery, florals and unexpected fruity notes, this collection gave me plenty of surprises. I share what I smell in each fragrance straight out of the bottle, how the scents compare, and which ones I think could work especially well in candles and other home fragrance products.

As a candle maker, smelling a fragrance oil out of the bottle is only the beginning. I’m particularly interested in how these fragrances perform once they're actually made into candles—including their cold throw, hot throw and overall scent character in wax. And yes, there are several from this collection that I definitely want to test!

I also talk about why candle makers should pay attention to each supplier's recommended product applications before using a fragrance oil in candles, soaps, personal care products, room sprays or diffusers.

If you're a candle maker, fragrance lover, small business owner, or you're simply curious about Lone Star Candle Supply fragrance oils, come smell the Outlaw Collection with me!

Which Outlaw fragrance would you like to see me make into a candle first? Let me know in the comments.

  • How I Started My Handmade Candle Business (And What I Learned)
    2026/08/07

Have you ever wondered what it really takes to start a handmade candle business?

In this episode of The Pauline Chilton Show, I'm sharing the story behind my candle-making journey—from experimenting with different waxes, wicks, fragrances, and containers to selling at local farmers markets and learning directly from customers.

When I first started, I thought making candles would be as simple as melting wax and pouring it into a jar. I quickly discovered that creating a high-quality candle is both an art and a science. Months of testing taught me how important burn performance, fragrance throw, consistency, and safety are before ever putting my name on a product.

In this episode, I talk about:

    · How I started making candles to help support The Pauline Chilton Show

    · The months of testing that went into creating a candle I'm proud to sell

    · What customers at farmers markets taught me about fragrance preferences

    · Why understanding your market matters in every business

    · How my background in real estate helped shape my approach to entrepreneurship

    · My vision for growing into retail stores and offering candle-pouring experiences

More than anything, this is a story about learning, listening, and building a business with purpose. Every candle sold helps support the continued growth of The Pauline Chilton Show and our mission of encouraging wellness, healing, personal growth, and meaningful living.

If you enjoy entrepreneurship, handmade products, small business, candle making, or hearing the real stories behind building a brand, I hope you'll join me on this journey.
