We’ve seen the cartoons: Satan with horns, a pitchfork, surrounded by flames and ruling over hell. But is “Satan is the ruler of hell” actually what the Bible teaches?

Satan is real. His influence is real. But he is not God’s equal, he does not rule hell, and he does not have ultimate authority. He is a created and rebellious being operating within limits established by God—and because of Christ’s victory, his final judgment is certain.

For Christians, that means we don’t have to live in fear of Satan. We take him seriously, stand against his schemes, and live with joyful confidence in the victory of Jesus Christ.

“God Helps Those Who Help Themselves” — Is That Actually Biblical?

It sounds wise. It sounds responsible. It even sounds biblical—but is it?

In this episode of The Pastoral Associates, we tackle the popular phrase, “God helps those who help themselves.” We discuss how our culture of independence, fear of appearing needy, and transactional view of God can convince us that we simply need God to supplement what we can already do ourselves.

But Scripture paints a very different picture. We aren't people who just need a little assistance—we are helpless apart from God's grace. From Psalm 121 to Ephesians 2 and Jesus' words, “Apart from me you can do nothing” (John 15:5), the Bible continually calls us away from self-reliance and toward dependence on God.

We also discuss why acknowledging weakness isn't defeat. It's actually where we learn the sufficiency of Christ: “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness” (2 Corinthians 12:9).

The question isn't, “Have I done enough for God to help me?” but, “Am I depending upon the God who is my help?”

Many Christians have unknowingly embraced the idea that if they're truly following God's will, life should become easier, smoother, and more comfortable. But is that actually what Scripture teaches?
