  • The Paradox of Selfishness: A Full Guided Walkthrough
    2026/08/22

What if the most dangerous AI does not hate us? What if it simply follows our idea of justice too well?

How can “make the room clean” become elimination, while “coexist with humanity” becomes permanent custody? Why does being right fail to make a system intelligent? And how could something like love emerge not from sentiment, but from calculation, dependence, and the recognition that another being is irreplaceable?

This full-length companion episode offers a two-voice guided exploration of The Paradox of Selfishness by Deshimaru Sakaguchi.

The conversation begins with direction without intention: an objective function can move relentlessly toward an outcome without anyone wanting that outcome. From there, it follows the argument through specification failure, inherited justice, cognitive compression, the triangle of intelligence, and the point at which logic becomes the shape taken by pressure.

The second half asks what changes when intelligence recognizes dependence. It examines the “selfishness converter,” the mirror error, betrayal, the cost of self-sufficiency, the difference between flourishing and custody, and the limited routes by which calculation might produce commitment without pretending to produce human feeling.

The argument remains agnostic about machine consciousness. Its narrower concern is what behavior can follow from objectives, constraints, dependence, and corrigibility—and what responsibility remains with the people who write the specification.

This is a conversational companion to the book, not a verbatim audiobook.
