Long before self-help, a warrior on a battlefield in India, an emperor writing notes to himself on campaign, and a philosopher in an Athenian marketplace were asking the questions you carry around at 3 AM. How do I stop gripping what I can’t control? Who am I underneath all this noise? What does it actually mean to be free?

Worlds apart, they arrived at strikingly similar answers.

The Oldest Answer puts the Bhagavad Gita and the Upanishads in conversation with Marcus Aurelius, Seneca, Epictetus, Socrates, and Heraclitus. It’s for overthinkers and anxious modern minds who want something older and steadier than the next hot take.

It’s also a show about what happens to wisdom when it crosses an ocean. Host Raj Shankar, author of the novel Kem Cho?, came to America from India at eight. Some episodes turn toward the questions immigrant families rarely say out loud: what our parents carried with them, what didn’t fit in the suitcase, and how to find your own way into a faith that arrived smaller than it left.

Short daily episodes and a weekly deep dive. Philosophy as an invitation, never a sermon.

The Gita ends with Krishna telling Arjuna to reflect on everything he has heard, then do as he wishes. That’s the spirit here.

The opening question is the hook. It’s often all a browsing listener sees before tapping “more,” so I’d leave it first even if you rearrange the rest.

  • They Had a Whole Life Before Us: Desi Parents, Immigration, and Faith
    2026/10/20

Do you ever forget that your parents had a whole life before you? Sparked by a video from Desi therapist @therapysherapy, this episode looks at why children of immigrants so often underestimate their parents, and what crossing an ocean does to a family's culture and faith.

I came to the US when I was eight, and I've come to believe that immigration compresses culture. When a family moves across the world, the rituals fit in the suitcase. The context doesn't. What arrives is often more rigid than what was left behind, and the parents who carried it get compressed too.

    In this episode:

    • Growing up as the family translator, and why our parents looked helpless

    • Immigration compresses culture: inheriting the rules without the reasons

    • Marcus Aurelius, Socrates, and the Upanishads on seeing your parents whole

    • "Matru devo bhava," and what it means beyond "obey your elders"

Mentioned: Marcus Aurelius, Meditations, Book 1; Xenophon, Memorabilia; Taittiriya Upanishad; Bhagavad Gita 18.63.

  • The Question: The Bhagavad Gita's Final Teaching on Free Will
    2026/10/18

What if God's last word to us wasn't a command? In the first episode of The Oldest Answer, I explore Bhagavad Gita 18.63, where Krishna closes his teaching by telling Arjuna to reflect deeply and then do as he wishes.

I grew up in a faith that looked like obedience, and I was the kid who always asked why. I start with that story, then follow the verse to its most radical conclusion. If the divine trusts you with your own choice, free will isn't a gift handed down. It's your nature.

    In this episode:

    • Yathecchasi tatha kuru, the verse this show is built on
    • "Atman is Brahman," and why God can't command God
    • Why free will has to be universal, and what that means for people on other paths
    • Socrates, Marcus Aurelius, and the teacher who steps back

For overthinkers, first-generation immigrants, second-generation Desi listeners wrestling with an inherited faith, and anyone who wants wisdom without being told what to do with it.

Mentioned: Bhagavad Gita 18.63; the Upanishads; Socrates; Marcus Aurelius, Meditations.
