Tarot is associated today with divination, Hermeticism, Hermetic Qabalah, astrology, ceremonial magic, psychological reflection, and hidden knowledge. Yet the earliest documented tarot cards appeared in fifteenth-century northern Italy as cards for a trick-taking game. Among the most remarkable survivors are the lavish Visconti-Sforza decks, painted for elite Milanese households with gold, allegorical figures, religious imagery, rulers, virtues, fortune, death, and cosmic order.

This episode follows tarot's documented and imaginative afterlives in chronological order: Renaissance Italian courts, regional tarot forms, early cartomancy, Antoine Court de Gébelin's Egyptian theory in Le Monde Primitif, Etteilla's divinatory system, Éliphas Lévi's occult correspondences, the Golden Dawn, Pamela Colman Smith and Arthur Edward Waite's influential 1909 deck, and the Thoth Tarot of Aleister Crowley and Lady Frieda Harris.

The historical evidence places tarot's beginnings in Renaissance card culture, not ancient Egypt or a demonstrated secret order. But later readers built a remarkably powerful symbolic tradition from its imagery. Did they uncover meanings already latent in the cards, or create new meanings that became inseparable from tarot itself?
