    Is fear a neurotransmitter? Can an emotion travel through the brain like dopamine, serotonin, glutamate, or norepinephrine? Or is saying that “fear itself can become a neurotransmitter” a poetic metaphor that crosses a scientific line? In Mailbag XL of The Observable Unknown, Dr. Juan Carlos Rey responds to listener Margaret R., who asks for clarification about a haunting phrase from an earlier Interlude: Is fear literally a neurotransmitter, or was that metaphorical language? The answer is clear. Fear isn’t a neurotransmitter. But understanding why reveals something far more interesting about fear, neurochemistry, consciousness, threat processing, memory, emotional contagion, and the relationship between scientific language and metaphor. What Is a Neurotransmitter? A neurotransmitter is a chemical messenger used by neurons to communicate. Neurons can release chemical substances that interact with receptors on other cells, changing the activity of those cells and helping information move through nervous-system networks. Examples include: Glutamate GABA Dopamine Serotonin Norepinephrine Acetylcholine Fear doesn’t belong on that list. There’s no molecule called fear stored inside a neuron and released across a synapse. There’s no synaptic vesicle containing a dose of terror. There’s no single chemical that can reasonably be called the fear neurotransmitter. So the scientifically stronger statement is: Fear is carried by neurochemistry without being reducible to one neurochemical. What Happens in the Brain During Fear? Fear and acute threat involve many interacting levels of the nervous system. Neurotransmitters participate. Brain circuits participate. Memory participates. Attention participates. The body participates. Interpretation participates. Structures and systems associated with threat processing can include the amygdala, hippocampus, hypothalamus, prefrontal regions, and wider neural networks involved in perception, learning, memory, defensive behavior, and bodily regulation. Chemical signaling can involve glutamate, GABA, dopamine, serotonin, norepinephrine, neuropeptides, and other systems. Physical responses may include changes in: heart rate, breathing, muscle tension, startle, attention, avoidance, freezing, and readiness for action. But none of these components, by itself, is fear. That distinction matters. There Is No Single “Fear Chemical” Popular neuroscience often reduces complicated psychological experiences to catchy chemical labels. Dopamine becomes “the pleasure chemical.” Oxytocin becomes “the love hormone.” Cortisol becomes “the stress chemical.” Serotonin becomes “the happiness chemical.” The real nervous system is far less tidy. The same signaling molecule can participate in many different biological processes. One emotional state can depend upon many interacting chemical, neural, bodily, cognitive, perceptual, and environmental processes. Fear is a striking example. There isn’t one molecule that becomes fear. Instead, fear emerges from coordinated activity across multiple systems. That makes the phenomenon harder to summarize in one sentence, but much more interesting. Joseph LeDoux and the Neuroscience of Fear The episode also explores an important distinction associated with neuroscientist Joseph LeDoux and modern research on threat processing. A brain can detect and respond defensively to danger without that defensive machinery being identical to the conscious feeling of fear. A person may startle. Their heart may accelerate. Attention may narrow. Defensive systems may become active. But a defensive reaction and a consciously experienced feeling aren’t necessarily the same thing. This distinction prevents us from treating one brain structure, one hormone, or one behavioral response as though it were the emotion itself. The amygdala isn’t simply “the fear center.” Adrenaline isn’t fear. Cortisol isn’t fear. Dopamine isn’t fear. A racing heart isn’t fear. They may participate in processes surrounding threat and emotional experience, but the subjective experience emerges from something more distributed and complex. Can Fear Travel Between People? This is where the original metaphor becomes interesting again. Fear doesn’t travel between neurons as a neurotransmitter called “fear.” Yet fear can still move. Imagine sitting in a crowded room. One person suddenly looks terrified. They turn toward the door. Another person notices. Then someone stands. A voice changes. A person runs. Within seconds, the emotional state of the room has changed. No molecule of fear crossed the space between those people. Information did. Faces communicate. Voices communicate. Movement communicates. Context communicates. One nervous system changes the sensory environment of another nervous system. The second person interprets those signals, and their own threat-processing systems respond.   • Interlude LXXXVII: Agency | Free Will, Albert Bandura, Harry Frankfurt, Choice, Responsibility, Habit, and Human Agency

    How much of your life have you actually chosen? You didn’t choose your first language. You didn’t choose the family into which you were born. You didn’t choose your earliest beliefs, your first fears, the century that received you, or many of the experiences that taught your nervous system what danger feels like. Yet, eventually, the world begins asking what you chose. So where does personal responsibility begin inside a human being shaped by forces they never selected? In Interlude LXXXVII of The Observable Unknown, Dr. Juan Carlos Rey begins a new arc, Agency and the Human Will, by examining one of philosophy and psychology’s oldest questions: What does it mean to choose when every chooser has already been shaped? Drawing on the work of psychologist Albert Bandura and philosopher Harry Frankfurt, this episode explores free will, human agency, desire, habit, responsibility, environmental influence, self-regulation, decision-making, and the possibility of changing what happens next without pretending that human beings somehow exist outside cause and circumstance. The governing idea is simple: You don’t have to have chosen what shaped you to choose what happens next. What Is Human Agency? Discussions of free will often become trapped between two extremes. Either human beings are completely free... or every thought, desire, emotion, and action is caused by something that came before it. But those possibilities may not exhaust the problem. A human action can have causes while still containing meaningful agency. You can be influenced without being entirely passive. You can inherit a pattern without being required to repeat it forever. You can be shaped by an environment while also learning to alter the environment that will shape you next. That’s where Albert Bandura becomes especially useful. Bandura’s work on human agency rejected a picture of people as passive products of whatever surrounds them. Human beings are affected by environments, but they can also select environments, avoid them, modify them, interpret them, and create new conditions through their own behavior. That creates a loop: The environment acts upon the person. The person acts upon the environment. The changed environment then acts upon the person again. Agency doesn’t have to stand outside causation. Agency can enter the causal chain. You Didn’t Choose the First Reaction. What About the Next One? Imagine someone grows up in a household where raised voices reliably signal danger. Years later, another person raises their voice during an argument. The body may respond before conscious thought arrives. Muscles tighten. Attention narrows. Defensiveness appears. Maybe the person freezes. Maybe they attack. Maybe they apologize immediately even when they’ve done nothing wrong. That first response may carry years of learning behind it. But recognizing where a response came from can change the relationship someone has with it. The person may eventually notice: “My body believes something old is happening.” And then another possibility appears. They might slow the conversation. Leave the room. Ask for time. Refuse to repeat a familiar response. Return later in a different state. The past still explains the alarm. It no longer has to dictate the entire conversation. That’s one form of agency. Not: Nothing caused me. But: Something caused this, and now I have a relationship to the cause. Harry Frankfurt: Do You Want What You Want? Philosopher Harry Frankfurt offers another route into the problem of free will. Human beings don’t merely have desires. We can sometimes take a position toward our own desires. You can want something while also wishing you didn’t want it. You can feel an impulse to say something cruel while knowing you don’t want cruelty to define your behavior. You can crave approval while disliking how much authority approval has acquired over your decisions. You can desire the cigarette while also wanting to become someone who no longer wants cigarettes. This creates an extraordinary second question. Not simply: What do I want? But: Which of my wants deserves authority? That distinction matters because desire and endorsement aren’t identical. An impulse can occur without becoming a command. An emotion can arrive without becoming an identity. A thought can appear without being adopted as a value. And a desire can speak without receiving the final vote. Am I Choosing This, or Is This Simply Where the Pattern Keeps Happening? This becomes the recurring question of the new arc: Am I choosing this, or am I merely the place where this keeps happening? Patterns have a peculiar way of becoming identities. “I’m impatient.” “I’m jealous.” “I’m terrible with money.” “I always choose the wrong person.” “I shut down when I’m criticized.” “I ruin relationships.” “I can’t control myself around food.” “I’ve never been disciplined.” Listen closely to what happens.     What actually makes something a story? Is story the same thing as plot? Why can an explosion leave us emotionally untouched while one quiet sentence at a dinner table changes everything? And beneath novels, films, myths, family histories, political narratives, and the stories we tell about ourselves, is there a smaller structure that explains why certain events matter? In The Written Unknown IV, Dr. Juan Carlos Rey introduces The Secret Scaffolding of Story: Narrative Architecture and the Strange Machinery Behind Every Tale, his relational theory of narrative and a practical framework for understanding how stories create meaning. The book begins with an apparently uneventful scene. A woman opens a letter and discovers that the man she has called Father for forty years isn’t her biological father. Nobody has left the room. Nothing has exploded. The furniture hasn’t moved. The photographs remain where they were. Yet the meaning of nearly everything around her has changed. Her relationship to her father has changed. Her mother’s silence has changed. Her childhood has changed without any event in the past physically changing. A stranger may have become kin. A family history may have become unstable. One revelation has rearranged an entire relational world. That thought experiment leads to the sentence at the center of the book: Plot is what happens. Story is how what happens changes relationships. Plot Tells You What Happened. Narrative Architecture Asks Why It Mattered. Traditional story analysis often begins with large structures. Quest. Tragedy. Comedy. Revenge. Rebirth. Romance. Homecoming. Those categories can be useful, but The Secret Scaffolding of Story asks whether they’re already too large to reveal the smallest machinery underneath them. A betrayal isn’t meaningful merely because “betrayal happened.” Something trusted became untrustworthy. Someone who belonged may now stand outside the group. Knowledge that was hidden has become visible. A secure bond has become unstable. An obligation may have appeared. Status may have changed. The visible event is only the beginning. Narrative Architecture asks what changed between the things involved. The book places itself in conversation with existing narrative theory while making a narrower proposal of its own. Rather than treating the event itself as the smallest meaningful unit of story, it asks which relational property changed through the event and what consequence followed. The Nine Primary Axes of Relational Change At the center of the framework are nine primary axes of relational change, with repetition and cycle-breaking operating as a governing temporal pattern. They aren’t nine plots or nine genres. They’re coordinates for noticing how meaning moves through a narrative. Existence: Beginning and Ending. What begins? What ends? A person, possibility, role, dynasty, friendship, identity, or remembered presence can possess forms of existence that don’t reduce to biological life.Boundary: Becoming and Belonging. Who belongs? Who becomes separate? Where does the line between insider and outsider, family and stranger, human and other, self and group get drawn?Bond: Joining and Leaving. Who forms an alliance, marriage, friendship, allegiance, dependency, or separation?Visibility: Revealing and Hiding. What becomes known? What remains concealed? A secret can exist unchanged for decades until knowledge of it rearranges every relationship around it.Valence: Rising and Falling. Who gains or loses honor, trust, status, desirability, legitimacy, or moral standing?Transfer: Giving and Taking. What changes hands? Money, authority, knowledge, names, inheritance, wounds, objects, responsibility, or power.Stability: Securing and Breaking. What becomes dependable, protected, promised, threatened, fractured, or destroyed?Position: Replacing and Restoring. Who occupies whose place? Who returns? Who is displaced? What role, title, identity, or authority gets restored?Polarity: Reversing and Returning. When does ally become enemy, student become teacher, victim become aggressor, or one role invert into another? Then comes the pattern that stretches across time: Repeating and breaking the cycle. Sometimes the deepest story isn’t a single change. It’s the recognition that the same change has happened again and again until someone finally refuses to repeat it. The book’s Story Relation Map formalizes these axes and applies them to scenes, character, and larger narrative structures. Why Familiar Plots Are Compounds From this perspective, familiar plots become combinations of smaller movements. A revenge story may involve injury, broken trust, lost status, obligation, transfer, instability, and an attempted reversal. A love story may involve visibility, joining, belonging, status, risk, and the possibility of separation. A homecoming may involve physical return, but the deeper story concerns whether someone can still belong to the world they left. ...
