  • Episode 4: From The Gravel Garden: Summer Memories, Gravel Benefits + Filming For TV
    2025/07/23

Welcome to episode 4 of the podcast! In this episode, Mum and I talk about her favourite type of gravel (from a garden designer's perspective) and the benefits of having a gravel garden, such as: easy weeding, lack of mowing maintenance, great source of drainage and the trendy “informal” garden look. Mum speaks on how she rebrands ‘weeds’ as ‘wild flowers’ in the gravel garden.

I reminisce on my fond childhood memories of simpler times with my pet chickens. I discuss how my brother and I built a small “chicken village” together and recount my memories of inner child-like peace and happiness that this activity gave me.

Mum takes a trip down memory lane as she relives her appearance on BBC 2’s TV series ‘The Ranganation’. She talks about her 2019 studio experience in London whilst filming series one, and then compares that to series 2 of the show, filmed on Zoom in 2020’s lockdown. Funny memories are recalled, such as Mum making a homemade loaf of bread, in the shape of the tv host's head, and how it featured on the show.

  • Episode 1: Welcome To The Garden
    2025/06/12

Welcome to the podcast! In this very first episode, Mum and I discussed the following:

    • What we’ll get up to in each podcast going forward.
    • Our house and garden’s rich history. Not only did our mediaeval monastery house burn down, it was also swept away by a large tidal wave in 1603, and was rebuilt in 1695. We spoke about a wing of the house which used to be a Knights Templar temple.
    • The beautiful location we’re sitting in this week, scattered with self-seeding valerian and borders bursting with blooms of our favourite rose ‘A Shropshire Lad’, and our nostalgic memories of my grandfather, who lived in Shropshire.
    • How the garden changes throughout the year, and how rapidly the plants grow in the early summer months and in our large poly tunnel.
    • Environmental and money-saving tips on building a garden by using reclaimed local materials, successional planting, plus advice on planning and planting, including the best month to plant.
    • Mum's garden design hero, Piet Oudolf, who reinvented the Manhattan High Line in his inspiring book ‘Planting a New Perspective’.
    • Our 3 lovely dogs, including our adorable chihuahua Milo, who joins us today.
    • Our silly, humorous ‘episode titles’ for each day in our life, inspired by Task Master’s episode titles, which conjure back memories of the day.
    • The ‘Creative Space’ online group and how you can share artworks for positive comments from Mum, and gain access to our weekly art prompt sheets, where you can have a sneaky look around our garden.
    • Mum reminisces on fond memories of how she felt she was living the life of The Railway Children, inspired by the once-existing 1960s railway line at the foot of our garden.
