In the summer of 2018, I took a wrong turn on a back road in central Illinois and found the Starlight Drive-In, shuttered since 1975. The marquee was dark, but the screen glowed. I walked through the empty lot, overgrown with weeds, and found the projection booth unlocked. Inside, a single 35mm reel was turning—but the projector was unplugged. The film on the screen showed a woman standing in a yard, waving. Over and over. I found a receipt from 1975 on the floor, and a name: Margaret. I touched the reel and it stopped. I left, but from my car I saw the screen light up again.
