Episode Title: The Night of Black Snow — LeMay, The Firebombing of Tokyo, and The Decision Nobody Remembers

Season 3, Episode 4 — The Decisions That Shaped the Western War

We remember Hiroshima. We remember Nagasaki.

We have almost entirely forgotten the night of March 9th to 10th, 1945.

Three hundred and thirty-four American bombers flew low over Tokyo in darkness. They dropped sixteen hundred and sixty-five tons of incendiary bombs. A firestorm consumed sixteen square miles of the most densely populated city on Earth. The ash fell from the sky in black flakes. The people running through the streets below called it the Night of Black Snow.

Between eighty thousand and one hundred thousand people died. Some estimates go higher. One million were left homeless.

Britannica describes it as one of the most destructive single acts of war in history — more destructive than Dresden, more destructive than Hiroshima, more destructive than Nagasaki.

The man who ordered it was a thirty-eight-year-old general named Curtis LeMay. He never apologized. He said it had to be done. He also said that if the United States had lost the war, he would have been tried as a war criminal.

He was probably right about both.

Robert McNamara — who served as a young officer under LeMay and later became Secretary of Defense — said on camera, in a documentary film, that he and LeMay had been behaving as war criminals. He said the only thing that separated them from prosecution was that the United States had won.

In this episode Amanda and Harry examine the decision LeMay made, the tactical logic behind it, the precision bombing doctrine it replaced, and the question that nobody has ever cleanly answered: when the decision is militarily effective, strategically significant, and kills a hundred thousand civilians in a single night — what is the honest assessment of the person who made it?
