On June 13, 1962, three men—Frank Morris and brothers John and Clarence Anglin—executed the only successful escape from Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary. This episode of The Missing Files investigates the meticulous planning behind their breakout, detailing how they crafted dummy heads from soap and hair, dug through concrete walls with spoons, and built a raft from raincoats to launch into the freezing San Francisco Bay. We explore the historical context of Alcatraz’s reputation as an inescapable fortress, where thirty-six prior attempts had failed, and examine the forensic evidence left behind when guards discovered the empty cells and macabre dummies.

The narrative delves deep into the mystery that has haunted investigators for decades: did the trio survive the treacherous currents and hypothermic waters, or did they perish within hours? We analyze the FBI’s initial conclusion that they drowned, contrasted with unsubstantiated rumors of survival, including claims by Clarence Anglin’s son. The episode covers the reopening of the case by the FBI in 2018 and its status as of 2024, highlighting the ongoing search for closure in one of America’s most enduring true crime mysteries. Through scientific analysis of the raft’s buoyancy and the conditions of the night, we assess the physical possibility of their escape.

Beyond the facts, this story examines the psychological allure of the unknown. It questions what 'success' means when there is no body to bury and no verdict to close the case. We discuss how the Alcatraz escape transcends criminal justice to become a mythos about human ingenuity, resilience, and the thin line between reality and legend. For fans of unsolved mysteries, prison break histories, and the complexities of the American legal system, this episode offers a comprehensive look at the event that defies easy explanation.
