Have you ever stood on a dark beach at night and watched a sea turtle mother finish her work?

She has just spent hours hauling her heavy body
out of the surf. She digs. She lays nearly a hundred soft, leathery eggs. She
covers the nest with sand, packs it down carefully with her flippers, and then…
she turns around and walks back into the ocean.

She does not stay. She does not watch. She
never returns.

In a few weeks the sand will shift and dozens
of tiny hatchlings will dig their way to the surface. Under the night sky they
will scramble toward the brightest horizon—the open sea. Most of them will not
make it. Crabs, birds, fish, and the simple exhaustion of that first frantic
crawl claim the majority. Only a tiny fraction ever reach adulthood.

So the question rises naturally: Why did God
design them this way? Why leave the most vulnerable stage of life completely
unattended?

Scripture does not give us a chapter titled
“Sea Turtles.” But it does give us a similar scene. In Job 39 the Lord Himself
speaks of the ostrich:

“She leaves her eggs on the ground and lets
them warm in the sand, unmindful that a foot may crush them… for God did not
endow her with wisdom or give her a share of good sense.”

God is not embarrassed by this design. He
claims it. He points to it as part of His own handiwork. The same God who
numbers the sparrows also numbers the hatchlings that never reach the water.
And still He chose this particular way for the sea turtle to continue.

The strategy is severe. It is also remarkably
effective. For more than a hundred million years these creatures have crossed
oceans guided by senses we still only partially understand—earth’s magnetic
field, the direction of waves, the faint light of the horizon. The ocean itself
becomes their nursery. The currents become their teachers. The very dangers
that thin their numbers also keep the species strong and widely dispersed.

Creation is under a curse. Romans 8 tells us
the whole creation has been subjected to frustration and groans while it waits.
High mortality is part of that present order. Yet even inside the groaning, the
design still speaks.

It speaks of a God who sometimes forms His
children by withholding the visible caregiver. Abraham is sent out with no map.
Joseph is sold by his brothers. David is left alone with the sheep. The
disciples are sent two by two with almost nothing in their pockets. Over and
over the pattern appears: the Lord removes the human safety net so that
dependence shifts from the seen to the Unseen.

The little turtle that finally reaches deep
water is not the one that was carried. It is the one that followed the light it
was designed to see and the current it was designed to feel.
