The Mystic Tye is a podcast for Freemasons

I intend to curate a environment where brethren and other aspirants can discuss ideas in a civil and productive way. We will not be afraid to tackle controversial or difficult topics, but all discussions will be done in a respectful and understanding manner. With the forbearance exemplified by our ancient brethren we will labour in the quarry together to prepare the stones of our thoughts and actions. All these prepared for the temple not made with hands.

  • EFC2026 Review with Brett Ken and Troy
    2026/10/15

How did EFC 2026 really go? Troy Spreeuw sits down with his fellow organizers of the Esotericism in Freemasonry Conference, Bro. Ken Lane and Bro. Brett Wolfe, a few weeks after the event for an honest debrief: what worked, what did not, and why anyone thought cramming five speakers into one day was a good idea.

They start with the whirlwind weekend: Lon Milo DuQuette in the living room with a guitar, Ike Baker finally meeting Troy in person after years of trading podcast appearances, a parking ticket from the City of Seattle, and why the room being in the building together reaffirmed the choice not to offer a virtual conference. Troy confirms that everything was recorded, that 214 pages of transcript are headed for the first published proceedings, hopefully by January, and that the clips from the Fight Club and Freemasonry presentation cannot be rebroadcast.

Then the hard questions. Five speakers was too many, and the biggest complaint was not enough time for fellowship. The group talks through the book table, which sold more books than any previous year thanks to the authors in the room, pre-sale ideas for next year, Edge of the Circle Books in Seattle, and why attendees keep coming back: two-thirds of this year's crowd had been before, and many say there is nothing else like it.

The second half looks forward. A practical on the Friday night ahead of the meditation, an author feature at lunch with signing tables, a Sunday breakfast of champions for the speakers, the return of the closing panel, more vendors, a possible salon for feedback, and the hope of building community that lasts beyond a weekend. Along the way: the Chihuly Garden and the Glass Museum in Tacoma, a fond thank you to Occidental Lodge for sponsoring, a peek at Troy's Five Minute Ritualist classes, three showings of Join or Die in Vancouver, and the word of the week, orthogonal.

  • Bringing the Work to Life with Bro. Salman Arif
    2026/10/08
What does it actually mean to be good at Masonic ritual? Bro. Salman Arif of Duke of Connaught Lodge turns the microphone around for a second time, with a page of written questions and one theme: the Work. Troy, newly installed as District Deputy Grand Master, takes them one at a time, and argues that getting the words right is only the barest minimum of what makes Masonry amazing.Salman starts with the word itself. Why call it work? Troy separates the capital W Great Work of the spiritual aspirant from the ritual work of a lodge, estimates roughly 200 man-hours to confer a single degree once every part is shared across the officers, and explains why antiquarian words like inculcate and delineate end up infecting the way a Mason thinks. From there to the magic that works whether you want it to or not, Lon Milo DuQuette's line that even a terrible man who gets through the door comes out a much less terrible one, and Ike Baker's EFC presentation on the call and answer teaching method found in Egyptian training texts. Salman offers a phrase Troy runs with: not a diminishing echo, but an evolving one. Then the core question. What separates good ritual from ritual that is merely correct? Troy has watched plenty of word perfect delivery rattled off with no inflection, and would rather a brother missed half the words and felt the half he said. He talks about the way he brings a candidate to light, the actor's trick of saying one line every possible way, the twelve minute Entered Apprentice tracing board in the Canadian work, and the night Bro. Lawrence Putnam delivered it and made it Troy's favourite piece. Along the way: cipher books, the jurisdictions where the ritual is still passed only mouth to ear, and what mentorship loses when a brother can learn alone.A long and very Troy detour follows: TikTok versus The King and I, the Leone westerns he has never seen, Thunderball, every James Bond, Star Wars, and a plea to go and talk to real people. Then back to the work. Salman asks how much of Troy's esoteric practice comes into lodge, and Troy describes ritual as performing a prayer rather than reciting one, symbols treated as if they are alive, and the different perspective that each chair around the lodge gives on the same ceremony. The chicken and the egg: memorize first, or internalize first? It depends on the time you have. Troy explains how to get the gist and deliver with confidence when you are handed an installation at the last minute, why you should record a piece in your own voice and play it while you sleep, and why, if you have six weeks, you start not now but right now. Then memory palaces, the lodge as the ideal palace, the archetypal temple not made with hands, and Jiddu Krishnamurti on being well adjusted to a profoundly sick society.Troy also tells the story behind his new approach. A hypoxic brain injury last year took a toll on his memory, and after a disastrous performance this spring he stopped learning by brute force and started using Kim March's The Five Minute Ritualist. He plans a monthly Zoom class on it starting in November, plus a tarot and Qabalah class, and the bonus round takes in Krishnamurti, Alan Watts, Joseph Campbell, a conversion at twelve, and a reconciliation with a former employer.Coming up with TroyOctober 9: District Deputy Grand Master visit, Mount Garibaldi Lodge October 17: Funeral in the morning and a Fellowcraft degree at noon, Mount Elphinstone Lodge, Roberts Creek October 27: Obligating Entered Apprentice candidates, North Shore Lodge No. 93 October 28: Freedom of Conscience, a new presentation, Capilano Lodge November: The Five Minute Ritualist classes begin on Zoom. • A Life in Many Colours with Bro. Julian Rees
    2026/10/01
Julian Rees, nearly sixty years a Freemason, an accomplished English Emulation ritualist, and one of the best-known writers on the spiritual side of the Craft, returns to The Mystic Tye to talk about a book that turns his own lens around. A Life in Many Colours: A Masonic Memoir, published by Arima Publishing, started with a nudge from Dr. David Harrison, who told Julian his life in Freemasonry had been exceptional enough to merit one. Julian explains why Lewis Masonic passed ("we don't do biographies"), why a memoir is not a biography, and how a Romanian artist friend came to draw the cover.Troy opens with Socrates on the unexamined life and asks what Julian found when he went looking. The answer is that early events shape the way you think: a 1957 call-up for National Service and a sergeant who taught him humility by making a platoon run the field again and again, a four year old in 1940 overhearing adults talk about invasion, a V-2 strike seen across the Thames while his mother scrambled for cover. Julian describes a father who was a stern Anglo-Catholic priest, a young American mother in a mismatched marriage, and how a troubled home makes you stop and ask on what ground a lodge stands. Troy shares his own view from a family of divorces. From there the conversation turns to ritual. Julian earned the Emulation silver matchbox for word perfect delivery, then realised he had spent years parroting words that were meant to work on him. He talks about sitting with a newly initiated brother and asking how it felt, because Freemasons think with the intellect of the heart, about the tracing boards chapter of the memoir, the Harris boards, the blazing star that outshines the sun, and Jacob's ladder resting on the Volume of the Sacred Law. Troy brings in freedom of conscience, the abuse of the holy book as a weapon, and why the magic works whether you want it to or not. Then the story Julian calls the reason he left the United Grand Lodge of England. When an Anglican priest was ordered by his bishop to give up Freemasonry, the Deputy Grand Master defended him, then added that Freemasonry "most certainly does not deal in spirituality." Julian wrote a letter, enclosed his keynote on The Spiritual Path of Freemasonry for the Masonic Restoration Foundation in Alexandria, Virginia, and got a two line reply saying his views were noted. He left, joined Le Droit Humain, and says he would not go back even if he could. Along the way: Troy on churches losing members and the toothpaste that will not go back in the tube, Julian on French laïcité and the charge to a candidate to receive "a light more pure which vivifies the spirit," and the Emulation prayer that says the divinity is unfolded from within. They ask whether fraternity and the spiritual path are two approaches to one institution, and why American lodges talk civic pride where European ones increasingly talk self-knowledge. Julian tells the story of Gerry Gerrard, a 96 year old stone sculptor and long absent member who stopped attending lodge in 1938 because Freemasons always do the same thing again. Troy's advice for any brother who has drifted away: try another lodge, every lodge is its own city. They weigh whether "esoteric Freemasonry" is a useful label, forbearance versus tolerance, Lon Milo DuQuette's big tent, and Troy's Thelemic orbit next to Julian's.The episode closes on the memoir's title, which came from a kaleidoscope of experiences and Newton's point that light is all the colours, and on Julian's insistence that the journey is nothing like a straight line, from a chapter on interrogation by the East German police to the lesson of the mosaic pavement. A last detour compares the Emulation ritual Julian says has not changed since the 1813 union with the four approved works in Troy's jurisdiction, and the Canadian work that grew out of the colonies.
