Discernment or Confirmation Bias? | When “God Said” Sounds Like What You Already Wanted

In this episode, we enter a heart-searching conversation about the difference between genuine spiritual discernment and confirmation bias—and why the two can feel dangerously similar when desire has already made a decision.

This is not a message about doubting everything you hear.

This is a motive test.

Confirmation bias gathers evidence to defend what the heart has already chosen. Discernment brings every desire, interpretation, prophecy, and opportunity before the Lord—and remains willing to receive an answer it did not expect.

Sometimes we are not waiting for God to speak.

We are waiting for Him to agree.

When our emotions are invested in a particular outcome, we can interpret every open door as confirmation, every coincidence as a sign, and every encouraging word as permission. We may call something “peace” simply because it offers relief, or call resistance “warfare” when it may actually be the mercy of God redirecting us.

True discernment does not begin with, “How can I prove this is God?”

It begins with, “Lord, what is true?”

Discernment is not the ability to make our desires sound spiritual.

It is the willingness to place those desires on the altar.

God is not threatened by our questions. He is not asking us to manufacture certainty or force meaning out of every detail. He invites us to slow down, examine the fruit, search the Scriptures, and let Him reveal what is operating beneath the surface.

If a word is truly from God, it does not need manipulation to survive examination.

And if the Lord removes something we were convinced He promised, our faith must remain rooted in His character—not in our interpretation.

The question is not only, “Did I hear something?”

The deeper question is, “Am I willing to obey God if His answer contradicts what I hoped to hear?”

We hear the word revival everywhere—revival meetings, revival culture, revivalists, revival fire. But there’s a question the Church rarely stops long enough to ask:

Is what we call revival actually biblical?

In this episode of The Myrrhologist Podcast, Marissa Saint Luc examines revival through Scripture rather than Christian culture, emotional experiences, crowds, manifestations, or movements.

What happens when we stop asking, “Did something powerful happen?” and start asking, “What fruit did it produce?”

Because Scripture gives us a pattern: when God moves upon people, there is repentance. There is conviction. There is obedience. There is transformation. There is a turning away from sin and a returning to God.

We’ll examine the difference between revival and repentance, visitation and transformation, gifts and fruit, emotional encounters and lasting reformation—and ask whether modern revival culture has sometimes confused the evidence of God’s presence with the excitement surrounding it.

Jesus warned that signs and supernatural works alone are not proof that He approves of the person performing them. The biblical test has always gone deeper.

What is the fruit?

This episode is an invitation to bring our definition of revival back under the authority of Scripture and ask a harder question:

Are we trying to revive a religious system—or return completely to God?
