In this episode of The History of Nepal, we travel back to the late eighth century to explore the Mithila Rebellion, a pivotal conflict that reshaped the political landscape of South Asia. While Prithvi Narayan Shah’s unification of the Gorkha kingdom is well-known, the earlier struggle between the Licchavi rulers and the rising Mauryan-influenced states in the Indo-Gangetic plain offers a deeper look at how borderlands were contested long before modern Nepal existed. We examine the role of King Indravarman I of the Licchavi dynasty and his diplomatic maneuvering against the expanding power of the Pala Empire and the remnants of Gupta authority. The episode highlights the significance of the Kosi River as both a geographical barrier and a trade artery, and discusses how the use of Sanskrit inscriptions served as a tool of political legitimacy during this turbulent period. Listeners will discover the intricate web of alliances involving the Thakuri chiefs and the strategic marriages that defined regional power dynamics. Through detailed analysis of archaeological findings and ancient chronicles like the Gopala Purana, we reconstruct the military campaigns and cultural exchanges that occurred along the southern frontier. This conversation sheds light on the often-overlooked eastern territories of early Nepalese history, revealing a complex interplay of religion, language, and statecraft that laid the groundwork for future kingdoms. #MithilaRebellion #LicchaviDynasty #IndravarmanI #PalaEmpire #KosiRiver #SouthAsiaHistory #NepalAncientHistory #SanskritInsriptions #GuptaEmpire #ThakuriChiefs #GopalaPurana #IndoGangeticPlain #MedievalNepal #BiharHistory #ArchaeologyNepal #HimalayanKingdoms #FexingoHistory #History #Documentary Keep every episode free: buymeacoffee.com/fexingo
