From the deepest loss and hardest challenges, Toward the life you were meant to live. There comes a point when survival is no longer enough. Despair, heartbreak, and the turmoils of life demand something more. You fight back, re-grasp your heart, soul and sense of self. You work from what you were… The hard, necessary work of becoming.

That is the ground the Mind Medic stands on. Not motivation, not theory, this is practical, tactical, real-life work for people ready to stop merely enduring and start living fully, in marriage, work, identity, and everyday lives. The mission is simple "So Others May Thrive."

Jim did not arrive at this work by accident.

He joined the Army and became a medic. He spent eight years in the Army Reserve and National Guard. The medic creed “so others may live”was not just slogan.

After service he worked as a direct support professional with men living with intellectual disabilities. That role taught patience, presence, dignity, and the quiet power of consistent care. It sharpened him. Made him more precise and More human.

The decisive catalyst came when he watched his father seek help for PTSD in his mid-fifties. Seeing a man of that strength open himself to vulnerability planted a seed. Jim carried that seed into graduate school for counseling.

He served on Crisis Response Teams, supported individuals in mental health programs, and worked with law enforcement and first responders with a Trauma Intervention Team.

He earned his degree and built Sebago Lake Counseling & Consultation into a thriving clinical practice, walking with individuals and families through some of life’s most difficult seasons.

When the Ground Gave Way

Then tragedy struck.

Jim’s father a Vietnam veteran, former firefighter, and a man who spent his life helping others — was overcome by PTSD and became one of the 22. HE had lost his grandfather the same way. The loss shattered Jim. It struck at identity, purpose, and the foundation of the work he had built. Moral injury. Despair. The real question of whether he could or would continue as a counselor.

He did not quit.

From that rebuilding the hurt, the struggle, the refusal to give up — Jim co-founded Operation Ray of Light. The nonprofit for veterans that exists so other families would not walk the same road alone, and so his father’s legacy would become light rather than only loss. This is the origin of the Mind Medic.

Standing with people in their darkest hours and refusing to leave them there. Military training, human services years, crisis work, clinical practice, personal collapse and reconstruction all forged into one clear purpose.

  • Age Optimization: Shrine or Ruin
    2026/08/30
Your body can be a shrine or a ruin. Which one are you building? I want you to picture two holy places. One is a basilica — tended, strong, still sacred. The other is a ruin: same stones, no one kept watch. Your body is not a rental car you can wreck and return. It is the only temple you will ever live in. This episode of The Mind Medic is the inspection. I’m Jim “Doc” Martel:medic, licensed clinical professional counselor in Maine, veterans advocate, and co-founder of Operation Ray of Light. People call me The Mind Medic because I treat the wounds that do not bleed — and I will not let a helper, a veteran, or a midlife adult treat their only body like disposable equipment. I lost my Vietnam-veteran father to PTSD. I built a practice and a nonprofit so the next family does not walk that road alone. Survival is not the assignment. Thriving is. In Shrine or Ruin I walk you through age optimization as stewardship, not vanity. Pain is information, not your identity. Midlife is not a crisis; it is an inspection of the shrine you live in. Mind and body are one united thing. Strength training after forty, nutrition that feeds mental health, recovery that does not let a diagnosis name you, and daily maintenance so you can keep serving other people without becoming the ruin. This is for adults in their forties, fifties, and sixties who did everything “right” and still wake at 2 a.m. with a fire alarm in their chest. It is for veterans and first responders who can run toward everyone else’s emergency and cannot sit still with their own. It is for counselors, nurses, parents, and hurting helpers who keep skipping the oxygen mask. If you have been “fine” for too long, this is your aid station. WHAT YOU WILL TAKE FROM THIS EPISODE • The basilica-versus-ruin picture that changes how you treat your body • Why rental-car living ends in collapse, and what stewardship looks like • Age optimization as purpose, measurement, strength, food, sleep, and soul • Pain as data you can work with instead of a story that owns you • Midlife as a inspection, not a breakdown • How helpers stay in the fight without burning the temple down • Movement as medicine for mind and body • A daily commitment small enough to keep and strong enough to rebuild capacity CHAPTERS 00:00 Two holy places — shrine or ruin 03:28 Age optimization and Doc’s own story 11:39 Maintenance and self-care 19:58 Principles of age optimization 28:03 Commitment to thriving 30:04 Oxygen mask first 32:30 Purpose 34:26 Measure the work 38:06 Midlife is an inspection 41:27 Strength training and aging 44:53 Nutrition and mental health 46:51 Injury and recovery 50:34 Resilience and capacity 55:09 The daily decision LINES WORTH KEEPING “Your body is a shrine, not a rental car.” “Survival is not enough; we must thrive.” “Pain is information, not your identity.” “Put your oxygen mask on yourself first.” “Midlife is not a crisis, it’s an inspection.” “Your body can be a shrine or a ruin.” THE MIND MEDIC The Mind Medic is the field manual for people who keep everyone else alive and then cannot turn themselves off. Mind Medic | Gardening as Stress Relief & a Daily Cathartic Practice

In this episode of Mind Medic, Jim walks you through one of the most practical, accessible tools for stress management and mental wellness: gardening. Drawing on generations of lived experience, he shows how working with plants can become a creative, grounding ritual that helps shift from survival mode into something more purposeful.

Join Jim in his backyard as he shares the bucket garden a veteran friend helped him build, the gutters he repurposed into tomato beds, the PVC cages, the companion plantings of beans and tomatoes, the marigolds, the slow-growing cucumbers, the lettuce ready to harvest, and the first baby cherry tomatoes appearing high on the vines. Along the way he explores:

    • Starting from nothing—how a bag of soil and a few seeds can create real growth and a quiet sense of accomplishment
    • The daily practice of checking, watering, removing dead leaves, and noticing what needs care (a cathartic process that mirrors nurturing without the pushback)
    • Creativity and research as mental health tools—repurposing materials, learning companion planting, and keeping the mind engaged
    • Watching change happen day by day, even when progress is slow, and the reset that comes from a solid natural rain
    • Growing your own food in multiple colors and why that matters for both body and mind
    • Why this doesn’t require a five-acre field: a single bucket, a rooftop, or a small patio setup is enough

Gardening becomes more than a hobby here. It is framed as a flexible item for the Mind Medic tool bag—something that can be done almost anywhere, that restores perspective after hard days at work or in life, and that quietly reinforces the possibility of growth.

From survival to thrive. This is Jim, your Mind Medic, offering a living, practical approach that keeps expanding with the people who use it.
