A name on a page is easy to dismiss until you type it into Google and the screen stares back with an obituary. I went looking for “Clair Morgan” to prove the red binder is fiction, a prop, a prank, anything that would let us laugh and move on. Instead, I found a Claire Morgan who really died, unexpectedly, and the date lands exactly one week after the binder showed up at our door. It is almost certainly a coincidence. It still feels wrong.

From there, I stop reading ahead and return to Clair’s journal in real time, picking up on Day 124 as she leaves Firewatch Tower 1 and heads six miles east into Blackwood Forest. A creek appears where the map shows nothing. The woods go unnaturally quiet. Shapes move at the edge of her vision. Two unseen voices track her like they are pacing her steps. And just when the “no house” theory seems proven, the little girl in the yellow dress returns, unchanged, silent, and somehow guiding Claire off trail.

What Clair finds is the Hollow House, a three-story structure sitting in a clearing with no road, no driveway, and no explanation for how it was built or why it has not been reclaimed by the forest. Nearby, a newer trailer faces the house like a watch post, holding a 1978 logbook full of warnings about “them,” a bright flash, and instructions never to enter. Then something screams in the woods, and Clair realizes too late that she was being followed long before she ever saw the house.

Three ranger badges turn up near a firewatch tower in Blackwood Forest, and each one carries the same impossible problem: headquarters insists the names never existed and the badge numbers were never issued. I’m Avery Quinn, and the deeper I read Claire Morgan’s handwritten journal, the less it feels like a spooky story and the more it feels like someone rebuilt six months of a stranger’s life down to supply lists, radio checks, petty complaints, and the kind of boring details no one would “need” to fake. That level of realism doesn’t comfort me. It warns me.

Claire’s discoveries pull a hidden timeline into the light: initials and dates scratched beneath shelves, names buried under the tower steps, and handwritten notes inside the binder that match the same initials on the missing badges. When she presses Chief Raymond for answers, he gives her none, then asks “How many?” before ordering her to put the badges back where she found them. The binder’s protocols stop reading like folklore and start reading like an instruction manual that’s been passed from ranger to ranger, surviving even when the records don’t.

Then Blackwood gets personal. Claire meets an older woman walking calmly inside the restricted zone who smiles and says the exact phrase the binder warns about: “I’ve always lived here.” Protocol 27 tells Claire to escort her to the boundary marker, ask nothing, and never look back, but the woman calls after her with a voice that shifts from warm to impossible, using Claire’s name and then her full name. Days later, a flashlight cuts through the trees and a wounded ranger in uniform climbs toward the tower, claiming it’s 1978 and giving a badge number that perfectly matches the badge Claire already found. Before Claire can make sense of what’s happening, he vanishes and takes the badge with him, leaving one terrifying lead: something like a house, six miles east past the creek.

Have you ever inherited a story from someone you've never met?

Last week, I thought someone was lying.

Maybe the anonymous man with the altered voice. Maybe the county. Maybe whoever keeps sending me the emails. Someone, in all of this, had to be the one deliberately misleading everyone else.

That's what I believed when I drove to St. Matthews Church. I expected the abandoned church parking lot to be empty.

It wasn't.

In File 004, Avery Quinn follows the one piece of advice an anonymous, unnamed, badge-less stranger gave before vanishing: ask ten people when the train station closed. What Avery finds instead is Bell Night. An annual gathering at an abandoned church that every single person in Millbrook knows about, attends, and cannot explain. They bring flowers and photographs and leave them as offerings for something none of them can name.

And at exactly 8:59 p.m. with no announcement, no signal, or anyone asking for silence, the almost full parking lot of people simply stopped talking. All at once. Like everyone reached the same thought at the same moment.

Then the bell rang.

What Avery uncovers in this episode isn't a cover-up or a conspiracy. It's something far more unsettling, a town full of people with false memories who genuinely believe their own answers, who aren't hiding anything, who are just… missing the part that explains why any of it matters.
