This podcast is a short story titled "The Midnight Visitor" by Robert Arthur, which centers on a clever secret agent named Ausable. Unlike typical fictional spies, Ausable is described as overweight and unassuming, leading the visiting writer Fowler to feel initially underwhelmed by their meeting. The plot intensifies when a rival spy named Max breaks into the room and demands a classified military report at gunpoint. Demonstrating exceptional presence of mind, Ausable fabricates a story about a non-existent balcony outside his window to deceive his attacker. When a sudden knocking occurs, Ausable lies and claims the police have arrived, prompting a panicked Max to leap from the window to his death. The story concludes by revealing that the person at the door was actually just a waiter delivering drinks, highlighting how Ausable used intellect rather than force to defeat his enemy.
