• 371: In Over Your Head at Work? How to Decide Whether to Stay or Go.
    2026/10/20

    Send us Fan Mail

Am I in the wrong job, or do I just need more time to grow?

If you’re feeling overwhelmed at work, struggling after a promotion, or questioning your career fit, I want to help you answer that question without letting one difficult stretch define your professional worth.

In this episode of The Mid-Career GPS Podcast, I explore what happens when a job’s demands exceed your current skills, preparation, or support. I use a highly visible workplace example to examine a situation many mid-career professionals experience privately: feeling capable and accomplished, yet unprepared for what a role requires.

Being uncomfortable does not automatically mean you’ve made the wrong career move. I explain how to distinguish a normal learning curve from a specific skills gap, a lack of resources or authority, and a deeper job mismatch. Understanding the difference can help you make a clearer decision about your leadership development, your next career conversation, and whether to stay or begin a job search.

I also unpack the “curse of the high performer” and why success in one position does not guarantee readiness for the next. If a promotion has left you questioning your abilities, I share how to replace harsh self-talk with an honest assessment of what you need to succeed.

    In this episode, I discuss:

    • How to tell the difference between new-job anxiety, a learning curve, and poor career fit.
    • What to consider when planning your first 30, 60, 90, and 180 days in a role.
    • How to identify the skills, feedback, resources, and decision-making authority you need.
    • Why high performers can struggle after a promotion.
    • How to acknowledge mistakes and ask for help before problems grow.
    • Three paths forward: stay and develop, renegotiate the role, or plan your exit.
    • Why honesty on your resume and in job interviews matters.
    • Three fill-in-the-blank prompts to help you start a productive career conversation this week.

If you’re dissatisfied with your job but hesitant to make a move in a challenging job market, I want to help you evaluate your options with greater career clarity. You may need a development plan, a conversation about expectations, or a thoughtful exit strategy. I walk through how to begin identifying the path that fits your situation.

Send us Fan MailYou know you bring value to your work. But can you explain that value when it matters most?If you’re feeling stuck in your career, preparing for a performance review, or job searching without gaining traction, identifying what makes you valuable is an important step toward greater career clarity and confidence. In this episode of The Mid-Career GPS Podcast, I’m joined by author, trainer, and auditor Denise Cicchella to explore how you can uncover your career “superpower,” communicate your expertise, and build visibility without waiting for someone else to recognize your potential.Denise shares how months of disability created an unexpected turning point in her career. Writing her first book opened doors to new opportunities, including training engagements in the Middle East. Her experience gives us a starting point for exploring how the expertise you already have can support a meaningful mid-career pivot. We also talk candidly about money, ambition, and career fulfillment. What happens when you’ve worked hard to earn more but have little time to enjoy the life you’re building? I explore that question with Denise as we discuss redefining success while staying realistic about financial responsibilities and income changes.Drawing on her book, Teach, Train, Transform: The Superhero Way, we examine how to turn expertise into meaningful learning. Whether you lead a team, facilitate meetings, deliver presentations, or teach on Zoom, I share our conversation about building trust through empathy, presence, and genuine connection. We also discuss where AI can support your work and why human skills remain central to the relationships that strengthen your leadership and influence. What I Explore in This EpisodeHow to identify your professional value and communicate it with greater confidence. What Denise’s unexpected career pivot reveals about creating opportunities from existing expertise. How recognizing your “cape-fitting moment” can help you understand and own your strengths. Why career visibility matters when preparing for performance reviews, pursuing promotion, or navigating a job search. How names, empathy, and presence can help you connect across organizational hierarchies. Why effective teaching helps people identify their next three steps. How introverts can teach and lead without adopting a personality that feels unnatural. How to rethink career fulfillment while acknowledging the practical realities of earning a living.A Question I Invite You to ConsiderWhat do people consistently rely on you to explain, solve, or make easier?Your answer can help you identify the value you bring. I invite you to think of one specific example that demonstrates that value, then practice explaining what you did and why it mattered. That’s a useful starting point for your next interview, performance review, or career conversation. If you’re ready to lead with more impact and make more intentional career decisions, I hope this conversation helps you recognize your strengths and consider where you want to take them next.Subscribe to The Mid-Career GPS Podcast for more conversations about job search, promotion, leadership, and career clarity. • 369: The Iced Coffee Interview Tip Debate
    2026/10/06

    Send us Fan Mail

If you’re searching for a new job at mid-career, you may be wondering what it takes to stand out in an interview. Does bringing your interviewer an iced coffee show thoughtfulness, or does it raise questions about your professional judgment?

In this episode of The Mid-Career GPS Podcast, I unpack the viral “iced coffee interview” debate and explain why a seemingly thoughtful gesture can create an uncomfortable first impression.

When you’re frustrated with your career or navigating a competitive job search, I understand the temptation to try something different. But I want your interviewer to remember your leadership, experience, and the value you bring. A drink or gift can pull attention away from the conversation you worked hard to prepare for.

I explore how bringing coffee to an interviewer can introduce safety concerns, suggest that you’re trying to win favor, or conflict with an organization’s gift policies. I also share a fruit basket story from a school district hiring process that illustrates how good intentions can raise concerns about a candidate’s judgment.

Then, I focus on practical job interview tips for mid-career professionals who want to communicate their strengths and find a role where they can lead more impactfully. From telling relevant stories to reading the room, I explain how to build rapport while keeping the focus on your qualifications.

    In this episode, I cover:

    • Why bringing coffee or a gift to your interviewer can create unnecessary distractions.
    • How industry expectations and workplace policies can affect interview etiquette.
    • What a school district hiring experience taught me about intentions and professional judgment.
    • How to communicate your accomplishments and connect your experience to the organization’s needs.
    • Why I recommend accepting water when it’s offered and minimizing opportunities for spills.
    • How to assess the room before using humor or taking a more casual approach.
    • Why I believe thoughtful preparation and self-awareness make a stronger impression than a memorable gesture.

If you’re preparing for a job interview, pursuing a promotion, or exploring a career change, I want to help you show up with confidence and clarity. Your interview is also an opportunity to assess whether the organization supports the kind of work, leadership, and career growth you want.

Apply for private leadership and career coaching at https://www.johnneral.com/workwithme

Listen to this episode before your next interview. I’ll help you focus on what you want decision-makers to remember: how you think, how you lead, and how you can help their organization succeed.

After his business collapsed and he filed for bankruptcy, Marques found himself working as a custodian for $8.25 an hour. His path back was not built on another impressive title. His career transformation offers powerful lessons for mid-career professionals who feel stuck, undervalued, dissatisfied at work, or uncertain about what comes next.Marques and I discuss what it really means to fail forward when the consequences are personal and financial. We examine the identity crisis that can follow a major career setback and the danger of tying your confidence to your job title, income, or professional status. We also explore how ego can prevent high-performing professionals from making necessary career changes. Marques explains how shifting his focus from recognition to service helped him rebuild his confidence, purpose, and career. This conversation is not only about recovering from failure. It is also about becoming a more authentic and influential leader.Marques shares practical insights about leadership communication, servant leadership, and recognizing your team’s contributions. We discuss how leaders can communicate results without making every accomplishment about themselves, why “we” language can strengthen trust, and how to demonstrate your individual impact while still honoring the people who helped create the outcome. We also address authenticity in the workplace, social media comparison, values conflict, and the pressure to produce results in cultures that dismiss leadership skills as “soft skills.”If you are navigating a career change, recovering from a professional setback, questioning your current direction, or trying to become a more effective leader, this episode will help you consider what you are building your next chapter on.In this episode, we discuss:How Marques moved from NFL success to business ownership, bankruptcy, and career reinventionWhat happens to your identity when your title and professional status disappearWhy ego can keep successful professionals trapped in the wrong careerHow humility and gratitude can help you rebuild confidence after a setbackWhat it means to fail forward when the consequences are realHow to communicate team results without minimizing your own leadership contributionWhy “we” language can create trust, alignment, and stronger workplace relationshipsWhat servant leadership looks like when expectations and pressure are highHow authenticity allows you to be honest about who you are while continuing to growHow to resist social media comparison and regain control of your time and mindsetWhat to do when your personal values conflict with your workplace cultureWhy asking for help and becoming a reflective listener are signs of strengthIf you are struggling in today’s job market or feeling dissatisfied with your career, remember that rebuilding does not begin with having every answer. • Ep. 367: You Don't Need More Information. You Need an Action Step.
    2026/09/22
Send us Fan MailFeeling stuck in your mid-career is not a character flaw. It may not even be an information problem. If you are dissatisfied with your job, struggling in the current job market, or uncertain about your next career move, your instinct may be to gather more information. You read another book, listen to another podcast, research another opportunity, or give yourself one more weekend to think about what you want. That can feel responsible. But sometimes, gathering more information is simply analysis paralysis disguised as preparation. In this episode of The Mid-Career GPS Podcast, I explain why smart, capable, and experienced professionals often delay the actions that could improve their careers. At mid-career, you have more to protect, including your reputation, professional identity, income, and responsibilities. That can make speaking up, networking, pursuing a promotion, or starting a job search feel riskier than continuing to research your options.I also explain the important difference between clarity and certainty. You do not need to feel 100 percent certain before taking your next step. In many cases, career clarity only emerges after you take action and learn from the result.I will walk you through a practical career-growth framework: Insight leads to action. Action creates feedback. Feedback drives adjustment. Adjustment leads to your next action. This cycle can help you make better career decisions, strengthen your leadership presence, increase your visibility, and regain momentum without making a reckless career move.I will also challenge you to identify one small career experiment you can complete within the next seven days. That experiment could involve contacting someone in your network, requesting feedback, exploring a new role, speaking with your manager, or making your professional value more visible to decision-makers.Small, intentional actions can give you better career information than weeks of overthinking. In This Episode, You Will LearnHow to define what feeling stuck means in your career right nowWhy collecting more career advice may be keeping you from moving forwardHow analysis paralysis becomes socially acceptable procrastinationWhy mid-career professionals often delay important career decisionsThe difference between career clarity and complete certaintyHow to take action when you are concerned about your reputation, identity, or paycheckA repeatable framework for turning insight into career momentumHow to run a seven-day career experiment that produces useful feedbackWhy visibility matters when you want a promotion or greater leadership influenceHow to help decision-makers recognize your value and readiness for advancementIf you are unhappy at work, feeling overlooked for promotions, navigating a difficult job market, or questioning what you want from the next chapter of your career, this episode will help you stop waiting for perfect clarity and begin creating meaningful progress.Take the Next StepIf you are ready to increase your visibility, strengthen your influence, and create more career momentum, register for my free webinar, Stop Waiting to Be Noticed. • 366: Why Every Organization Needs a "Show Bible" with Robyn Hatcher
    2026/09/15
Send us Fan MailEvery workplace has an unwritten script. It shapes how decisions are made, how conflict is handled, who gets heard, and who gets promoted. If you do not understand that script, you may find yourself improvising during some of the most important moments in your career. In this episode of The Mid-Career GPS Podcast, I’m joined by Robyn Hatcher, a former soap opera writer for All My Children and One Life to Live who now helps leaders communicate with greater confidence, clarity, and influence.Robyn introduces the concept of a “Show Bible,” the behind-the-scenes guide that captures a show’s characters, relationships, history, motivations, and conflicts. Every organization has its own version, even if nobody has written it down. Understanding your company’s history, power dynamics, communication styles, and unwritten workplace rules can help you navigate conflict, build stronger relationships, and make more informed career decisions. We also examine the difference between policy onboarding and culture onboarding. Most organizations teach new employees about systems, procedures, and benefits. Far fewer explain how feedback actually works, what leaders expect during one-on-one meetings, which teams operate in silos, or which questions may feel unsafe to ask.If you were never taught how your organization truly operates, Robyn explains how you can retrofit your onboarding by observing patterns, asking better questions, and paying attention to how people communicate. We also share two practical communication frameworks you can use to prepare for and navigate difficult workplace conversations. Her EDIT method helps you:Examine the situation objectivelyDecode the underlying dynamicsIdentify the outcome you wantTranslate your message for the person receiving itHer LUVE method helps you:Listen carefullyUnderstand the other person’s perspectiveValidate what you have heardExpress your message and make a clear requestThese tools can help you communicate your value, advocate for yourself, manage workplace conflict, and strengthen your leadership presence without sacrificing your authentic voice.Robyn and I also discuss why toxic leadership behaviors spread, how silence allows workplace drama to continue, and what it means to become an “oasis” that colleagues can trust. We close with a simple personal brand audit that can help you identify your strengths, collect evidence of your impact, and speak about your value with greater confidence. If you are a mid-career professional who feels overlooked, misunderstood, or uncertain about how to navigate your workplace, this conversation will help you read the culture more accurately and communicate more intentionally. In This Episode, You Will Learn:How Robyn followed the “breadcrumbs” from acting and soap opera writing to leadership communication coachingWhat a Show Bible is and why every workplace has an unwritten versionHow workplace culture and power dynamics affect communication, conflict, and promotionsWhy traditional employee onboarding often fails to explain how an organization really operatesHow to retrofit your onboarding when you were not given the cultural information you neededWhat to observe when decoding workplace communication styles and unwritten rulesHow to use the EDIT method to prepare for difficult workplace conversationsHow to use the LOVE method to listen, validate, and communicate a clearer requestWhy toxic leadership behaviors spread throughout an organizationHow silence can protect dysfunction and sustain workplace dramaHow to become a trusted and steady presence on your teamWhy the right mentor may recognize your leadership potential before you doHow to conduct a personal brand audit and gather evidence of your professional valueYou do not need to become someone else to communicate more effectively. You need to understand the environment, prepare your message, and take greater command of how you show up.Because how you SHOW UP matters.Click here to take Robyn’s Leadership Communication Survey.Click here to visit Robyn’s website.Click here to connect with Robyn on LinkedIn.Support the showIf this episode resonated with you and you want more support in how you SHOW UP for your career and life, there are two ways we can work together.Learn more about my SHOW UP Leadership Lab, my monthly membership program, at https://www.johnneral.com/showupIf you would like to learn more about how I can help you as your leadership and career coach, visit https://www.johnneral.com/workwithme.Get John's free weekly leadership and career newsletter at https://www.johnneral.com/the-mid-career-gps-newsletterOther ways we can connect:Connect with John on LinkedIn here.Get John's books on Amazon here. • 365: Are You the Kind of Professional I Help?
    2026/09/08
Send us Fan MailYou can be talented, experienced, and dependable and still feel invisible at work.If you have ever wondered, “I’m doing great work, so why am I not gaining traction?” this episode is for you. Many mid-career professionals reach a point where working harder no longer produces better career opportunities. They get passed over for a promotion, receive vague or unhelpful feedback, watch colleagues navigate workplace politics more effectively, or struggle to gain visibility with senior leaders and decision-makers.That does not necessarily mean they lack the skills or experience to advance. More often, the problem involves career clarity, professional visibility, strategic positioning, and the ability to communicate their value. In this episode, we pull back the curtain on who hires us for career coaching and what usually prompts them to seek support. We discuss why accomplished professionals can remain overlooked despite consistently delivering strong results. We also explore why endlessly revising your resume, adjusting your LinkedIn profile, or pushing yourself to be more productive may not solve the real problem.Creating career momentum requires more than excellent performance. It requires intentional conversations, targeted relationship building, clear career goals, and the confidence to advocate for the value you bring to an organization.I also address two common questions about career coaching: How is coaching different from therapy, and how do you know when you are ready to work with a coach?I get candid about what coaching cannot guarantee. No ethical career coach can promise you a promotion or job offer. What I can promise is a coaching process designed to help you show up differently, strengthen and protect your professional brand, receive direct feedback, and take intentional action toward measurable career change. In this episode, you will learn:What commonly drives mid-career professionals to seek career coachingWhy high performers get overlooked despite producing strong resultsHow to shift from working harder to making more strategic career movesWhy clarity, visibility, and positioning matter for career advancementHow to communicate your value to leaders and decision makersWhat career coaching is and how it differs from therapyHow to determine whether you are ready to work with a career coachWhy intentional action is essential for creating career momentumIf you are tired of waiting for someone to recognize your value, join me for my free webinar, Stop Waiting to Be Noticed: How Mid-Career Professionals Increase Visibility, Influence, and Career Momentum.Register at https://johnneral.com/webinar.Subscribe to The Mid-Career GPS Podcast, share this episode with a colleague who needs to hear it, and leave a rating and review. • 364: Building Visibility When Work Is Shifting
    2026/09/01
Send us Fan MailYou can be talented, dependable, and exhausted from giving your best and still feel invisible at work. After taking a two-and-a-half-month break from recording, I’m back with an honest look at what has been changing in my life and business. I recently had a coaching session that gave me the kind of clarity I could not find by working harder, overthinking my next move, or asking an AI tool to generate another template. In this episode of The Mid-Career GPS Podcast, I explore what it takes to rebuild your confidence and career momentum when things do not go as planned.I share what happened during my humbling experience competing on the PBA50 Tour. Tournament after tournament, I failed to advance beyond the first round. The experience reminded me of what many mid-career professionals face when they repeatedly apply for jobs, complete first-round interviews, and receive another rejection.Eventually, disappointment can make you question your talent, preparation, and future. But failure does not have to become your identity.I walk you through the three questions I use to turn disappointment into better decisions courtesy of two-time Olympic Champion, Lannie Basham:What did I do well? What did I learn? What will I do differently next time? This simple resilience framework can help you evaluate a job rejection, recover after being passed over for a promotion, prepare for an important workplace conversation, or regain momentum when you feel stuck in your career.I also share why I decided to end the SHOW UP Leadership Lab membership. Simplifying my business allows me to focus more intentionally on helping mid-career professionals increase their visibility, strengthen their influence, and create meaningful career momentum. If you feel undervalued, overlooked, or unsure about your next career move, working harder may not solve the problem. You may need better information, a clearer strategy, and more intentional conversations with the people who can influence your career. In this episode, you’ll learn:How to rebuild your confidence after a professional disappointmentWhy repeated rejection can distort how you see your abilitiesHow to turn difficult experiences into practical career lessonsWhy doing excellent work is not enough to get noticedHow visibility and influence affect career advancementWhen you may have “crossed the bridge” in your job or careerWhy honest conversations are essential for career clarityHow to stop waiting for someone else to recognize your valueYou do not need to have your entire career figured out today.
