概要

🎙️ Welcome to The Mental Edge with Al Hogan.

This Podcast is dedicated to one question:

What separates people who perform at their best from those who never reach their potential?
The answer isn't always more talent, strength, knowledge, or technique.

Often, it's the mental game.

I'm Al Hogan—a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Black Belt, martial arts instructor, retired U.S. Army CW4, former federal law-enforcement executive, and mental performance coach.

For decades, I've studied leadership, performance, martial arts, personal development, and the psychology behind achievement.

Here we'll explore practical strategies for:

• Building confidence and a powerful self-image
• Developing mental toughness and resilience
• Performing under pressure
• Visualization and mental rehearsal
• Goal setting and achievement
• Creating successful habits and performance routines
• Leadership and personal development
• Overcoming fear, mistakes, and failure
• Developing young athletes
• Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and combat-sports performance

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu will be one of our laboratories—but the lessons will go far beyond the mats.

Whether you're an athlete preparing for competition, a parent developing a young competitor, a coach building champions, or simply someone determined to become better, this podcast will help you develop your Mental Edge.

Train Your Mind. Build Your Identity. Perform Under Pressure.

  • Where Does Attitude Come From? What Every Coach Needs to Understand
    2026/10/26

Attitude is the wild card in athletic performance. But where does it actually come from?

In our last video, we broke down the formula for individual human performance: inherent attributes (what's in your DNA), acquired attributes (what you can learn, given time), and attitude. A good attitude can raise performance. A bad one can drag it down. In this episode of the Mental Edge, Coach Al explains where attitude starts, and why that matters for every coach.

    In this video:

Attitude comes from three places: an athlete's expectations, their values and beliefs, and their self-concept, where all of it is stored.

An athlete will only behave in line with their self-concept. That self-concept has three parts: self-image, self-ideal, and self-esteem.

All of it is learned. That means a coach can help change it.

This is more than a rah-rah speech or a pat on the back. The self-image is the athlete's master program. To change the program, you have to give it new language.

Coaches, what have you seen shape your athletes' attitudes? Drop it in the comments. I read them.

  • Mental Toughness Through the Ages: 4 Lessons from History for Jiu-Jitsu Athletes | The Mental Edge
    2026/10/25

What separates athletes who perform under pressure from those who fall apart when things get hard?

Mental toughness, focus, and visualization can sound like modern ideas. They aren’t. People have been training the mind for more than 2,000 years. In this episode of The Mental Edge, Coach Al walks through four lessons from history, connects each one to what modern sports science suggests, and shows how to apply them to your jiu-jitsu training right away.

    In this episode:

    • The Stoics (Epictetus, Seneca, Marcus Aurelius): stop spending energy on what you can’t control. Your opponent, your bracket, and the referee aren’t yours. Your preparation, effort, and response are.
    • Eastern martial arts traditions: train your attention. Breathing and present-moment focus can help you stay on grips, balance, and the exchange in front of you, not the scoreboard or the crowd.
    • The ancient Greeks: develop body and mind together. Mental rehearsal of a takedown, done alongside physical drilling, can support skill development.
    • The Roman military: mental skills need repetition. Five minutes of focused mental practice a day is a practical place to start.

Mental toughness isn’t pretending you’re never afraid. It’s the ability to stay focused and respond well when things get difficult, and that ability can be trained.

  • Talent + Skill × Attitude: The Coaching Formula for Individual Performance
    2026/10/23

Coach, what are you actually trying to accomplish?

Most coaches say winning, development, or confidence. Coach Al argues that underneath all of those is one goal: getting the most out of each individual athlete. In this episode he breaks down a simple formula that explains where individual performance comes from, and why most coaches overlook the part that matters most.

(Internal Attributes + Acquired Attributes) × Attitude = Individual Human Performance

    In this episode:

    • Internal attributes: the natural gifts an athlete is born with, like strength, power, and dexterity. You can’t change these.
    • Acquired attributes: everything an athlete can learn, including technique, tactics, drills, and strategy.
    • Attitude, the multiplier: why a poor attitude drags down even a talented, well-coached athlete, and why a strong one can lift an average athlete far beyond their physical gifts (think Rudy).
    • Why attitude is the one factor that can change right now, for better or worse.

Whether you coach soccer, football, baseball, jiu-jitsu, or any other sport, this formula gives you a practical lens for your day-to-day coaching. Upcoming episodes dig into where attitude comes from and how to develop it in your athletes.
