On this episode of the RVA Bike Scene, I’m diving into a series called RVA Bike Shops, which is what it sounds like. We’re checking out as many of the cool bike shops in the region–and we have a ton.

For this one, Field Trip Bikes, it’s mostly audio because I did a story on this cool new bike shop for Richmond Magazine’s October issue. In the future, I’ll be riding my bike to a lot of these and posting them on my YouTube channel IanStewartCycles. Field Trip will be included.

You may already know Joel Alford–he also owns ReCycles Bike Shop on Cary Street, just past Carytown. Field Trip has taken root in Churchill across the street from Triangle Park. The building is also no stranger to housing bike shops either, having once housed Wheel Simple Bicycle Repair and Cyclus.

On a humid Thursday afternoon in early June a sort of ballet on bikes is taking place on the tennis courts at Westover Hill Park. Welcome to the weekly pick up game of Bike Polo.

Coming on this special episode of the Mechanics of Transportation and the RVA Bike Scene, I’m diving back into doing a full fledged radio feature story. If you’re not familiar with my work, for years I was the transportation and general assignment reporter for the local public radio station in Richmond, Virginia. And besides doing quick, 1-minute turnaround stories, we got to spread our audio wings and do 3-4 minute and sometimes longer feature stories. These are filled with natural sound or AMBI, good quotes and it’s basically good story telling.

Anyway, I did this story on a local bike polo club that meets twice a week and also travels out of state to compete in tournaments.
