On a humid Thursday afternoon in early June a sort of ballet on bikes is taking place on the tennis courts at Westover Hill Park. Welcome to the weekly pick up game of Bike Polo.

Coming on this special episode of the Mechanics of Transportation and the RVA Bike Scene, I’m diving back into doing a full fledged radio feature story. If you’re not familiar with my work, for years I was the transportation and general assignment reporter for the local public radio station in Richmond, Virginia. And besides doing quick, 1-minute turnaround stories, we got to spread our audio wings and do 3-4 minute and sometimes longer feature stories. These are filled with natural sound or AMBI, good quotes and it’s basically good story telling.

Anyway, I did this story on a local bike polo club that meets twice a week and also travels out of state to compete in tournaments. Peter Norton is a UVA Professor and author who's forte is the history of the how the automobile came to dominate our culture. On Thursday, July 9th 2026, he gave a slide show presentation about Richmond's mobility history (RVA had some of the first streetcars it the country) and spoke about what we can learn from it.

Cool news to share for the RVA Bike Scene. We’ll have some special updates from the Tour de France by Richmond’s own Andrew Mann, who is part of the Richmond Area Bicycle Association and is also puts on the holiday Christmas bike program in which hundreds of bikes are donated to kids on the holidays. .

He’s in Barcelona and will be sending us regular audio updates of what he’s seeing as he watches the Tour — so not stats, winners, etc but just what he’s seeing.

So, look for his stories coming soon. The Tour de France starts Saturday, July 4.
