For the second year in a row, I visit Andrew Mann from the Richmond Area Bicyclist Association as he and a team of volunteers start building about 100 kids bikes for the holidays---in all they'll build about 400 or so.

They can use some help too--go here to RABA.

  • RVA Bike Scene - Episode 2. HenBIKEo Recap & what's next
    2025/09/22

    Send us a text

Sean Yeager and myself love all things bike–from pro road races, to mountain biking to cyclocross. We love to see kids on bikes, infrastructure built to help more people bike and laws focused on bike (and pedestrian) safety. However, Sean is more knowledgeable about them than I am, which is perfect for this pod.

In this new podcast, under the umbrella of the Mechanics of Transportation, we’re going to cover all things biking in the Richmond, Virginia region — what races are coming up, what bike clinics are happening and a whole bunch of other stuff.

In episode 2, we get a recap from Sean's race at HenBIKEo & hear from the organizers, plus we preview Tuesday's Cyclocross race at Forest Hill Park.

In this new podcast, under the umbrella of the Mechanics of Transportation, we’re going to cover all things biking in the Richmond, Virginia region — what races are coming up, what bike clinics are happening and a whole bunch of other stuff.

In this inaugural episode, we talk about this week’s HenBIKEo 2025 bike festival, what people can expect; and we also dive into what cyclocross is all about. Sean also mentioned this bike wash kit.

But first, we need your help in getting a name for this endeavor. Here are the ideas we have so far:

    • RVA’s got Cyclocross
    • Cyclocross-RVA
    • RVA BikeScene - (if it’s more general)
    • RVA PodCross
    • Get Crossed

Let us know your pick or suggest one yourself.

  • Near Misses - Part 2 - How NOVA Does It.
    2025/09/16

    Send us a text

In this episode, part two of near miss dashboards, I speak with Family for Safe Streets Northern Virginia Executive Director Mike Doyle about their really extensive mapping and data collection tool.

Not only can you see and input near misses–you know, when say a car almost sideswipes–which is just one instance, you can see data for the busiest days of the week, the hours that have the most near misses and more.

We talk about how he started the chapter in NOVA and how the data they collect helps make the streets safer for everyone–not just cyclists, but pedestrians and even drivers.
