- Received a classical Chinese education, learned Mandarin and Hokkien while contemporaries Westernized.
- Married into the Phoa family around 1893, linking two leading Chinese institutional lineages and settling in Buitenzorg.
- Rose through colonial ranks: Luitenant (1905), Kapitein (1908), and positioned as successor to Majoor Tio Tek Ho.
- Awarded the Grand Gold Star for Loyalty and Merit in 1930, yet by 1942 was detained without charge alongside colonial leaders.
