Summer 2021. A dry stretch of pavement outside Millbrook, New York, where the sumac grows thick along the telephone poles. A retired botanist named Everett starts drawing the same plant every evening — first from memory, then from something he insists is standing just beyond the ditch. He shows Luna the sketchbook. The later drawings are not plants. They are not anything he can name. The last one is dated the day he stopped answering his phone.
