  • Why You Should Never Pitch for Free: Adverse Selection
    2026/10/20

The moment you agree to design a comprehensive project brief or pitch a corporate client without a cleared budget, you are funding their development stage for free. In this video, I break down the hidden commercial pitfalls of corporate procurement, the escalation of commitment trap, and why writing proposals for unapproved budgets guarantees your firm will get ghosted.

    -----

Some companies are bloody cheeky. When did it suddenly become normal to be asked to design and lay out an entire build spec so companies "can explore if there's a potential fit"?

We had an RFP come in this week. Good brief, actually. They'd thought about what they wanted, which isn't always the case, and the project was well within the sort of work we do.

They wanted us to build the programme, deliver it, then hand it over to their own academy. Fine, we license content all the time.

But they also wanted the whole thing designed as part of the proposal. Modules, durations, case studies, role plays, assessment methodology, scoring rubrics, even the reinforcement plan for three months afterwards.

By the time you've answered all of that, you've basically created the entire programme.

So we asked what budget had been approved.

They hadn't decided. They were going to look at everyone's proposals first and work it out from those.

    Oh hell no.

Now, I can quite understand wanting to know what something costs before committing to it. Have a conversation with the provider. Tell them roughly what you're thinking of spending and they can tell you what's possible.

But asking several suppliers to spend two or three weeks working out the entire programme, so you can then decide whether there's a project, is taking the weewee big time.

And the temptation for you is to do it anyway, because it's a big company and it could be a substantial contract, and you don't want to rule yourself out.

Then by the time you've spent three days on it stopping feels stupid. So by the second week you're now arranging another "exploratory" call because that somehow feels more convincing and easier than accepting the fact that you, and 4 other companies are basically handing over an entire programme build for free.

You need to catch yourself before this happens.

We thanked them for thinking of us and withdrew.

I've no objection to competing for work. I do object to doing the work as part of the competition, for free.

    We're a business not a charity.

02:34 What happens when you ask for the number
03:14 Reason one: you're being asked to design it for free
04:38 Reason two: it changes who bids, not what it costs
05:25 Reason three: nobody has approved any money
06:10 When a buyer genuinely can't give you a figure
07:19 Why a range costs the buyer nothing
08:03 The same shape whatever you sell

  • Are Luxury Stores Intentionally Designed to Intimidate?
    2026/10/14

Do global luxury brands deliberately engineer their environments to make everyday consumers feel inadequate, or are clients simply projecting their own psychological insecurities onto premium spaces?

In this episode, we pull back the curtain on how elite luxury houses like Chanel, Hermes, and Louis Vuitton actually structure their operations.

Discover the hidden mechanics of high-end client acquisition and why making people feel unwelcome is never a viable commercial strategy.

The assumption that luxury stores use intimidation as a deliberate marketing hack completely misunderstands the actual business model of the high-end sector.

Luxury houses do not optimize for mass-market crowds; they optimize for high-ticket privacy, security, and individualized attention. The queues outside elite Paris boutiques are not designed to perform status theater, they are structural limits engineered to give the salesperson the time and space required to serve an executive client properly.

In this session, we strip away the surface-level marketing assumptions to explore high-end space execution.

    We cover:
    * The Harrods Impossible Maxim: Historical analysis of high-credibility, problem-solving luxury service cultures.
    * The Queue Management Reality: Why luxury houses tightly regulate physical inbound traffic to protect the visual environment.
    * Overcoming Self-Placement Bias: The hidden psychological trap where a customer disqualifies themselves before they even speak to an associate.

  • Why Running "Special Offers" Destroys Luxury Brands
    2026/10/06

The moment your premium consulting or service business runs a public promotion, you have informed the market that your original fee was a lie.

In this episode I break down the behavioral psychology of high-ticket pricing, the price-quality inference bias, and the exact script to deploy when a client demands a discount.

Discover why "free" services carry absolute zero value in a client's subconscious mind, and how to protect your profit margins by reducing project scope instead of dropping your numeric worth.

Every premium service provider, from interior designers and architects to corporate lawyers and executive coaches, will eventually face a prospect who looks at a quote and asks for money off.

If your instinctive reaction is to simply drop your number to close the deal, you are permanently damaging your brand's authority.

In the luxury market, buyers use price as a primary shortcut to calculate your competence. When you lower your fee without changing the job description, you don't look flexible, you look delusional, or desperate.

If your price is unsupported by your digital presence, your proposal structure, or even the way you answer the phone, cold traffic will simply drift away to your competitors.

In this episode, we strip away the surface-level marketing advice to isolate the hard laws of luxury transaction mechanics.

    We cover:
    * The Price-Quality Inference: Why the subconscious mind automatically equates cheap rates with amateur results.
    * The Latitude of Price Acceptance: How to pinpoint the exact pricing ceiling your specific sector will tolerate.
    * Gifts vs. Promotions: The precise chronological moment to deliver a complimentary asset to trigger deep client reciprocity.
