What do you do when everyone around you is afraid, the circumstances appear impossible, and even those closest to you are failing to trust God? Jonathan refuses to remain passive while the Philistines threaten Israel. While Saul and his remaining army wait, Jonathan and his armor bearer cross into enemy territory with a simple confidence: “Perhaps the Lord will work for us, for the Lord is not restrained to save by many or by few.” Jonathan does not know exactly what God will do. He does know who God is. He understands that victory does not depend upon the size of Israel’s army, the strength of its weapons, or the apparent odds against them. God can save through many people, through a few people, or through one person. The power belongs to God. Jonathan and his armor bearer enter the Philistine position, defeat the soldiers before them, and then God does what Jonathan could never accomplish on his own. Fear spreads throughout the Philistine camp. The earth itself trembles. The enemy falls into confusion and begins fighting against itself. The army that had caused Israel to panic is now panicking. Those who had hidden themselves begin returning to the battle. Those who had been with the Philistines turn back toward Israel. And Scripture makes clear who deserves the credit: The Lord delivered Israel that day. Jonathan did not create the victory. God did. But Jonathan trusted God enough to put himself in a position where he could see what God would do. Jonathan did not trust the circumstances. He trusted the God who controlled the circumstances. The same is true for us. Our greatest problem is our sin, and God accomplished that victory through Jesus Christ. If we can trust Him with our eternal salvation, then we should also learn to trust Him with the next hour, the next decision, and the circumstances that seem impossible today.
