Summary
A man visits his old college friend, Paul Fancort, a famous naval architect living in a family home near the Hudson River in New York. Paul looks worn, haggard, and deeply troubled. His visiting friend hopes he's not working his drawing skills too much.
Paul confides in his friend that he returned home unexpectedly early one afternoon and found his wife, Leila, fast asleep on a couch. Then, intending to affectionately kiss a distinctive little brown beauty mark (mole) on the side of her neck—a feature he knew intimately since their honeymoon—he pushed aside her hair and looked closely. To his horror, the mole was completely gone, with no sign it had ever existed.
Paul Fancourt's realization shakes him to his core. He is left tormented by a bizarre mystery regarding whether the woman living as his wife is truly who she claims to be. Is it really her? Or an imposter?
The ending is very touching. Have a listen....
