What can the natural world teach us when we stop trying to make it a metaphor—and simply pay attention?
This episode begins beneath my oak tree, Wallace, and travels with me back to the South African bush, where a lion resting in the middle of the road and the watchful impala nearby stirred a deeper contemplation about safety, healing, privilege, and the nervous system.
Maybe peace isn’t always evidence that we’ve healed, and vigilance isn’t always evidence that we haven’t. Our circumstances matter. Our histories matter. And so does the inner work that helps us recognize when the danger has passed.
From there, I find myself questioning something even larger: What is abundance, and who taught us how to measure it?
Perhaps the wisdom isn’t in choosing the lion over the impala, comfort over simplicity, or one way of living over another. Perhaps it is learning to recognize what each has to teach us—and becoming conscious of the “herds” that have shaped what we believe safety, wealth, and enoughness are supposed to look like.
A conversation about grief, nature, nervous systems, inherited definitions of abundance, and the forms of wealth that cannot be accumulated—only experienced.
Because everything contains wisdom when we are present enough to listen.
