  • Wait, it’s a musical about what!? The Lifeline Project explores the science and the process behind the musical, ’Lifeline’, a show about antibiotics, Alexander Fleming and the biggest current health crisis you might never have heard of - AMR. In this podcast we delve into the science behind the stories in the show, exploring the global health through the eyes of scientists, doctors, writers and theatre folk. With antimicrobial resistance (AMR) threatening to kill 10 million people a year by 2050 the time to act is now, and what better way to find out about crisis than through a musical and its accompanying podcast! So, what is AMR? How do we prevent it? And how on earth can a musical about antibiotics make any difference? The Lifeline Project is produced and hosted by Graham Richardson with original music and editing support from Robin Hiley. The musical itself will be coming to New York for an off-Broadway run in autumn 2024, so watch this space for more details! www.lifelinemusical.com @lifelinemusical

In this episode we look at the role innovation can play – innovating new antibiotics, relatively unexplored treatments and preventing infection in the first place. So how expensive is it to make a new antibiotic? Are viruses actually our friends? And what does it have to do with the whales?

    Featuring:

Silas Holland, Executive director in infectious disease policy at Merck

Dr Michele Ritter, Infectious Disease Specialist and Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of California, San Diego

Michael Mosha, Pharmacist and Public Health specialist at Roll Back Antimicrobial Resistance Initiative in Dodoma, Tanzania - https://rbainitiative.or.tz/

The Lifeline project is a podcast exploring the science and process behind the musical, Lifeline, a show about antibiotics, Alexander Fleming, and the biggest current global health crisis you might never have heard of.

The first episode is a potted history of the show and it's principal cast members - not the actors, the microbes that help make their bodies function. From the pathogens that make us sick to our microbiomes which help us digest food and fight disease, we look at the different tiny creatures that we meet in lives and ask, how do they survive, are they all ‘good’ or ‘bad’ and how on earth did we represent them on a stage?

Our guests this week are Maren Hunsberger and Jake M. Robinson.

Maren is a scientist, science communicator, producer and actor who has recently created a show, ‘Fascinating Fails’ for PBS Terra that you can find on their YouTube channel https://www.youtube.com/@pbsterra . You can also catch up with Maren on social media @marenhunsberger (or on TikTok @marenmicrobe)

Jake is a scientist, podcaster and author who studies ecosystem restoration and microbial ecology. His first book, ‘Invisible Friends’ is available now and his second book ‘Treewilding’ is on the way. You can get in touch with him via his website https://www.jakemrobinson.com/ or on social media @_jake_robinson
