  • 103. Why Conflict Isn’t Really About the Content: 5 Years of Emotional Connection
    2026/08/19

Five years after the original release of Emotional Connection, Dr. Lola Gershfeld and co-author Ramin Sedehi reunite to reflect on what they have learned about emotions, trust, leadership, and relationships—and celebrate the launch of the book’s second edition.

At the heart of their conversation is a powerful idea: when conflict happens, we often focus on what was said, what happened, or who was right. But beneath the content is an emotional experience that is shaping how people react, protect themselves, and relate to one another.

Ramin and Lola share the story behind Emotional Connection, how their own thinking has evolved over the past five years, and why emotional connection matters far beyond the workplace.

They explore what it means to:

    • Recognize the emotions underneath conflict rather than continually arguing about the content.
    • Build trust by connecting with people at a deeper level than expertise, authority, or transactions.
    • Create space for another person's emotions without immediately trying to fix the problem.
    • Recognize the negative patterns that keep people disconnected.
    • Regulate your own emotions so you can respond differently—even when the other person isn't ready to work on the relationship.
    • Use emotional connection to strengthen relationships at work, at home, and throughout life.

Dr. Lola also shares an important realization from her recent work: repairing a relationship doesn't always have to begin with two willing people. Sometimes one person, by changing how they regulate, respond, and create emotional safety, can begin changing the entire pattern between them.

As Ramin puts it, work and life aren't separate worlds. It's all one life—and our ability to connect with one another shapes all of it.

This episode is a celebration of five years of Emotional Connection, but even more, it's a conversation about what becomes possible when people feel valued, cared for, heard, and emotionally safe with one another.

  • Ep. 102 – Silence Isn’t Peace: What It Means When Teams Stop Talking
    2026/08/15

When someone on your team suddenly stops speaking up, stops pushing back, or simply nods along, it can be easy to assume everything is fine.

But silence doesn’t always mean peace.

Sometimes, silence is a sign of hurt, disconnection, or a relationship that no longer feels safe.

In this episode of The Leader in You, Dr. Lola Gershfeld and Polina explore what workplace silence may really be communicating and why ignoring it can allow disconnection to deepen. They unpack the common conflict cycles of pursue–pursue, pursue–withdraw, and withdraw–withdraw—and show how one person’s silence can increase anxiety in another, creating a painful cycle that keeps both people stuck.

You’ll also learn how leaders can begin re-engaging someone who has withdrawn without pressuring them to open up before they feel safe.

Using the Emotional Connection (EmC) Process, Lola and Polina share three simple ways to begin rebuilding connection:

    1. Get curious about what has changed and gently ask what may be happening.
    2. Share how the disconnection impacts you while communicating care, concern, and the importance of the relationship.
    3. Respond safely when they begin to share by validating their experience rather than immediately trying to fix the problem.

Because when someone goes quiet, the answer isn’t to ignore them—or push harder.

It’s to create enough emotional safety for them to come back into the relationship.

If someone on your team has gone quiet, this episode will help you understand what may be happening beneath the silence and how to begin reconnecting.

  • 101. When Trauma Hits the Workplace: Helping Teams Heal and Move Forward
    2026/08/06

When trauma enters the workplace, leaders often focus on getting everyone "back to work." But what if the fastest path forward is helping people feel emotionally safe first?

In this episode of The Leader in You, Dr. Lola Gershfeld and Polina Marian explore how leaders can help employees navigate loss, conflict, unexpected change, and other traumatic workplace experiences without leaving people emotionally stuck.

Using real client stories, they discuss:

    • How grief and trauma affect team performance
    • Why unresolved emotional experiences keep employees stuck
    • The difference between repairing a relationship and deciding it's time to part ways
    • Why employees stop aligning with an organization's values—and what often happens first
    • The subtle warning signs leaders frequently miss before conflict and turnover occur
    • How the EmC Process helps teams process difficult experiences and reconnect
    • Why emotional safety accelerates healing, engagement, and long-term performance

Whether your organization is experiencing the loss of a colleague, organizational change, conflict, layoffs, or simply increasing disconnection, this conversation offers practical guidance for creating a workplace where people can heal, reconnect, and move forward together.

Because sometimes the greatest leadership isn't solving the problem—it's creating enough safety for people to process it.

    Key Takeaways

✔ Trauma doesn't only happen outside of work—it can result from conflict, layoffs, sudden loss, or major organizational change.

✔ Employees often disengage because they are protecting themselves, not because they no longer care.

✔ Repairing relationships before making employment decisions creates healthier outcomes for everyone involved—even if someone ultimately leaves the organization.

✔ Early signs of disconnection are often subtle. Leaders who recognize them early can prevent unnecessary conflict and turnover.

✔ Emotional safety allows people to process difficult experiences, reconnect with others, and regain their ability to contribute.

✔ The strongest workplace cultures don't avoid difficult conversations—they create the safety needed to have them.
