Their movements were traced through an electronics shop, a raincoat store, and a bar where they bought mineral water. Then they headed toward Morro do Vintém.

Days later, forensic experts found both men dead on the hill. They were dressed in suits, with rain gear, a mineral-water bottle, handwritten technical papers, a note referring to capsules and an awaited signal, and two crudely made lead half-masks. No obvious fatal injury explained their deaths. The autopsies failed to establish a cause, while problems with decomposition and toxicological handling meant investigators never reliably identified what the men may have consumed.

The case attracted theories of accidental poisoning, suicide, robbery, homicide, spiritual experimentation, and eventual claims of extraterrestrial contact. A local woman later reported seeing an unusual luminous object near the hill on the same evening the men were believed to have died.
